The Georgetown Hoyas and Creighton Bluejays meet on Saturday in the Big East Tournament Championship at Madison Square Garden. Georgetown upset another opponent on Saturday, as they followed up their 72-71 win over Villanova with a 66-58 win over Seton Hall. It wasn’t as big of an upset as the Villanova game, but it was still a win as small underdogs against a pesky Pirates squad.
Exhaustion was a non-factor for Patrick Ewing’s boys against Seton Hall. It’s easy to let up defensively, but they showed no signs of being tired yesterday. It was a close game throughout, before Georgetown pulled away in the final minutes for an eight-point win. Like I’ve said, conference tournament time is all about getting hot at the right time. Georgetown is playing with a lot of confidence and certainly hot.
It only takes one game for the flames to be extinguished, though. This will be the fourth straight day that Georgetown has a game scheduled. They opened the Big East Tournament with a comfortable 68-49 win over Marquette, and then impressively came back the next afternoon for a 72-71 victory over Villanova off late free throws. Instead of running out of gas, the Hoyas once again proved the oddsmakers and public wrong with a 66-58 win against Seton Hall.
The No. 8 seed in the tournament already beat the No. 1 with their win over Villanova. Now they have an opportunity to bounce the No. 2 seed and win the Big East. Not only will this give the Hoyas the Big East Tournament, but it also grants them an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Georgetown moved to 12-12 on the season with the win, so they’re still outside looking in despite this nice run.
Creighton defeated UConn, 59-56, in a tight battle that went down to the end. It was a solid win for Creighton, as they needed to be sharp to fend off a decent Huskies squad. Creighton goes into the Big East Championship with a win in three straight games. They closed out the regular season, 93-73, over Butler and then the same in their first tournament matchup against Butler, 87-56. Georgetown Hoyas vs. Creighton Bluejays Big East Championship Betting Odds:
Georgetown vs. Creighton Prediction:
Creighton can’t afford to get lazy on Saturday against Georgetown. If they need any reminder of what Georgetown is capable of doing right now, just watch the tape from their win over Villanova on Friday. Patrick Ewing has his team playing confidently and in their best form of the season at the right time. Their win on Friday can’t be overlooked against Seton Hall can’t be overlooked either. Seton Hall is a talented team that were kind of underrated in the Big East this season. Is Creighton going to be a bigger challenge, though? Most certainly, but not unbeatable.
Throughout the season, Georgetown were decent on both sides of the floor. They just were never able to get over the hump, until most recently. Georgetown were decent offensively, with 71.7 points per game, while the defense allowed around the same as they scored at 73.4 points conceded per game. In the Big East Tournament, I’ve been impressed with their defensive intensity. Patrick Ewing has not allowed his team to get sloppy on defense.
During their last five games, Georgetown has netted 72 points and allowed 68.4 points per game. Georgetown has already beaten Creighton once this season. On the road in a tough spot, the Hoyas won as 14-point underdogs straight up. They dispatched the Bluejays by a score of 86-79 in one of their most impressive efforts in their regular season. Creighton returned the favor with a 63-48 win a week later, but the Hoyas know that they can beat Creighton, and they are going into the Big East Championship with all of the confidence in the world.
Creighton is a 20-7 team going into this evening. They were good, though didn’t live up to expectations in several spots this year. The Bluejays averaged 78 points per game for 42nd in the NCAA. Their defense has been adequate, but can get out of form at times. They’ve conceded 69.1 points per game for about the same as Georgetown has this year. With the momentum and confidence Georgetown has right now, I think that 8 points provides a lot of value on the Hoyas in the Big East Championship.
