The NCAA Tournament gets under way tonight with The First Four matchup between Wake Forest and Kansas State, but by no means is that the only college hoops action worth watching. We have a pick for the NCAA Game, as well as a few NIT leans
The NCAA Tournament (technically) gets under way tonight, but I know many of you, like me, aren’t really buying this “First Four” stuff. I mean, if a game doesn’t count on your bracket, it is pretty hard to get too pumped up over the result. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll WATCH it. I’m a college hoops crackhead. But by no means are the two First Four games the only wagers on the board tonight. I try not to even venture down the path of pretending to know much about the relative strength of the #16 seeds squaring off tonight and tomorrow…
There are some good games in the NIT as well – I originally had an IU pick written as I liked the Hoosiers at home, forgetting that even though they are the favored seed they are going on the road in a scheduling oddity. That pick is ERASED – sorry for any confusion!!! Weird scheduling anomaly and too many NCAA games rattling around my crowded brain… alas…
My NIT leans are as follows: GA Tech +3 at HOME, Oakland +10 at Clemson, and Cal -9.5 at home
Today’s NCAA Tournament Pick
Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Kansas State Wildcats – PICK ‘EM
If you wanted to gripe about ANY of the Field of 68 inclusions, K-State would be the fairest complaint. They enter tonight 20-13 with their two best non-con victories coming against Boston College and Omaha and their best overall “result” a 69-68 loss to Maryland. They went 8-10 in the Big Twelve, but their road wins at West Virginia and Baylor probably saved their season. They also have a 30-point loss to Oklahoma clunking up the resume.
Meanwhile, Wake Forest may not defend much, but man is John Collins an absolute BEAST. He can put the Deacons on his back and get a win in this tournament, and I think that’s exactly what he will do tonight. The Demon Deacons resume isn’t markedly better than K-State’s, but their offenses is. K-State is prone to long offensive droughts. Wake averaged over 83 points per contest and has topped the 80-point mark in 11 of their last 12 games. They shoot nearly 48% from the floor and I like them to have an easier time scoring tonight.
I’ll take Wake to fire the opening salvo for ACC supremacy tonight in Dayton.
