Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Florida State Seminoles Pick – NCAAM March 13, 2021

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Florida State Seminoles meet on abnormal terms Saturday night. Georgia Tech did not have to win in the semifinals to get to the ACC Tournament Championship. They were scheduled to play the Virginia Cavaliers, but that game was called off because of a Covid issue for the Cavs. With Virginia gone from the ACC Tournament, Georgia Tech gets an automatic ticket to the ACC Championship.

The Yellow Jackets were playing well down the stretch, so this berth is not completely undeserved. Georgia Tech had more than a puncher’s chance of beating Virginia straight up in that game. They were 5-point underdogs and Virginia looked vulnerable to me this season. With the NCAA Tournament cancelled last year, Virginia are considered the defending champions from 2019.

Georgia Tech defeated the Miami Hurricanes, 70-66, in the first-round of the tournament to get to the ACC Championship. That’s all the Yellow Jackets had to do for a ticket to the conference title game. It’s not their fault, as they were locked and loaded for Virginia. Now the question for Virginia is whether they are going to be able to play in the NCAA Tournament.

They need seven straight days with negative test results, so that puts them right near the beginning of the tournament. We’ll have to see how it goes, and before you fill out your bracket, be sure to check on the latest news. Speaking of brackets, TheSportsGeek is running a FREE bracket challenge with over $160,000 in prizes, including a 2021 Chevrolet Corvette and $500,000 for a perfect bracket.

Will Florida State be on your bracket to win it all? It wouldn’t be the most outlandish prediction, as I think we’re going to have a wide open tournament in our hands. Gonzaga might be the team to beat, but they haven’t played a contender in months. The Seminoles could be a sleeper that might be able to sneak up and do damage. They are 16-5 on the season, and went 11-4 in the conference.

The Seminoles are coming off a hard-fought 69-66 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels yesterday. North Carolina was coming on late in the season, so no surprise that Florida State had to fight for a win in a tight one there. It’s imperative that they don’t overlook the Yellow Jackets just because of their automatic spot in the ACC Championship. Georgia Tech vs. Florida State Prediction:

Florida State suffered a 78-70 loss against North Carolina on the road a few weeks ago. That snapped a four-game winning streak for the Seminoles, who beat Boston College, 93-64, and then lost to Notre Dame in a meaningless regular season finale, 83-73. The Seminoles were able to get back at North Carolina with a 69-66 win on Saturday. They got out to an early lead, but an undisciplined second-half just about squandered their 35-24 lead at halftime away.

The Seminoles possessed one of the more efficient offenses in the ACC this season. They scored an average of 79.6 points per game for 30th in the NCAA. Their ability to hit the three ball separated them from most of the conference. Florida State shot 38.5% from beyond the arc for 16th in the country. The Seminoles also showed the talent to play inside as well. They rank 67th in the NCAA on the offensive boards, and 72nd defensively in hauling in rebounds.

Conversely, Georgia Tech has struggled, especially second point opportunities, as they are 317th in the NCAA in that regard. Better defensively, but still well outside of the top-100 in 169th. Teams are shooting 45.4% from the field against Georgia Tech. That’s a touch too high for my liking, and good for only 268th in the NCAA. Conversely, Florida State has been impressive at holding teams to 40% from the field, 23rd in the NCAA.

The Yellow Jackets beat the Seminoles, 76-65, in their only regular season meeting on January 30. It was a great win for Georgia Tech, though they were at home where they’ve gone 11-3 this season. On the road, Georgia Tech weren’t so hot with a record of 4-5. Expect Florida State to learn from their mistakes from that game and put together a much better performance tonight. Georgia Tech and Florida State likely play close for 35 minutes before the Seminoles pull away with the three ball. I am laying the points in a projected 77-69 win for Florida State.
