Hartford Hawks vs. UMBC Retrievers Pick – NCAAB March 9, 2022

The Hartford Hawks and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers are at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena at UMBC for an American East Tournament game. This game is a little off the beaten path compared to the other games, but a winning game is a winning game.

While most conferences play on a neutral court, this is not the case in the American East. Teams are rewarded for their play in the regular season and there is home-court advantage.

UMBC took advantage of their court to open the American East Tournament with a 93-85 win over UMass Lowell on Sunday. Guard Danell Rogers scored 23 points to lead the Retrievers to an entertaining win.

The MVP of that one was Szymon Wojcik off the bench, though. Boonyasith scored 17 points and 8 rebounds through 28 minutes.

He helped UMBC win their fourth straight game and a first-round win over UMass Lowell. UMBC is a 17-13 team with a record of 11-7 in the American east.

They welcome a Hartford squad coming off a 61-49 win over Albany at home on Sunday. That was an impressive defensive clinic, but now Hartford goes on the road to UMBC where they should find it tougher versus the No. 2 seed.

Hartford vs. UMBC Prediction:

Hartford is just about as mediocre as you can find on the college hardwood. That goes for both ends of the floor. They don’t do anything especially well and it shows in their record.

When you watch Hartford play, yeah, it looks like a 12-19 team. Sometimes records don’t tell the whole story, but I’d say it is true with the Hawks.

Hartford is scoring 70.4 points per game for 196th in the NCAA. The biggest concern for Hartford is their dreadful free-throw shooting. Hitting the freebies at the charity stripe is so important this time of the year.

However, Hartford is just 68% from the three-throw line for 295th in the nation. Games and the point spread often come down to free-throw shooting in conference tournament games.

If that’s what this game turns into, UMBC has a serious advantage in that regard. The Retrievers are 11th in the NCAA with a 78.6% free-throw percentage. That’s a significant discrepancy.

Hartford Hawks vs. UMBC Retrievers Betting Trends:

  • 2-5 ATS in their previous seven games on the road versus a team with a winning percentage better than 60% at home
  • 11-5 ATS in their previous 16 games after a win
  • 9-2 ATS in their previous 11 games on a Wednesday
  • OVER is 7-3 in their previous ten games on the road
  • OVER is 8-1 in their previous nine games after a win
  • 4-0 ATS in their previous four games
  • 5-2 ATS in their previous seven games after covering the spread
  • 4-0 ATS in their previous four games versus a team with a losing record on the road
  • 4-0 ATS in their previous four games as a betting favorite
  • 5-2 ATS in their previous seven games after covering the spread

UMBC is scoring an average of 79.1 points per game and shooting 48.3% from the field at home. This has been consistent with their offensive output recently.

The Retrievers have been playing good basketball, as they’ve scored an average of 83 points per game through their previous five attempts.

Conversely, Hartford has scored 73.8 points against with a 44.7% field goal percentage. They’ve allowed over 73 points per game while netting 69.6 points per game through their last five attempts.

UMBC went to Hartford for a 92-85 win on February 23. That was a dominant performance from the offense, as the Retrievers were clicking for 40 minutes.

I don’t see as many points this time, but a 7-point UMBC win looks about right.
