The Idaho State Bengals and California Golden Bears Haas Pavilion after Cal opened their Pac-12 slate recently. They opened the Pac-12 campaign with a 73-61 win against the Oregon State Beavers at home last week, but came short in Utah on Sunday, 66-58.
It wasn’t the worst effort from Cal against a decent opponent on the road. The defense showed up again, and they covered the spread for the fourth straight time. Cal may not be going to the Pac-12 Championship or NCAA Tournament, but they’ve been a good bet this season.

If head coach Mark Fox could get some offense out of his team, then Cal would be in a good spot. They just don’t have enough offensive pop to scare USC or UCLA, though. Cal isn’t athletic enough to make it work against the top teams in the conference.
In any case, Cal has been competitive and they’re making out well at covering the spread at least. Before their loss on the road to Utah, the Golden Bears were 65-57 winners over Fresno State, and then an impressive showing against a decent Oregon State squad.
Idaho State will look for their first win since beating Eastern Oregon on November 9, 82-61. They are coming off a 73-70 loss to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks as 5.5-point favorites on Saturday. Idaho State has failed to cover the spread in all seven of their games this season.
The Bengals beat Eastern Oregon in their season opener, but there wasn’t a line on the game. That’s their best performance of the season, though a 78-60 loss on the road at Nebraska was acceptable. It still wasn’t enough to cover the 12 points.

Idaho State vs. California Prediction:
Idaho State has found it difficult to score this season. I’m not so sure how that’s going to go against a defense like Cal.
The Golden Bears stress defensive pressure and don’t like to give their opponent much room to operate. That’s unfortunate for a Bengals squad that has been in trouble versus teams with much weaker defenses than Cal.
Idaho State is 341th in the country with an anemic 60.5 points scored per game. They are 294th with a field goal percentage of 41%.
The Bengals are hitting at a rate of only 28.7% from three, 320th in the NCAA. Keep in mind that Idaho State hasn’t been up against hot shot defenses.
Nebraska is the only school they’ve played from a power conference. While Cal doesn’t have the best offense either, 299th with 64.9 points a game, their schedule has been more difficult.
Against a team like Idaho State, the Golden Bears’ offense should look better than they are. Note that teams are shooting 46.9% from the field versus Idaho State.

The Bengals are 328th in the country with teams shooting 46.9% against them from the field. Idaho State will make Cal look good.
They should be able to dominate the boards, which should end up being the difference. Idaho State is one of the worst teams in the country in finding second chance points.
In 354th, there are only four teams that are worse on the offensive boards than Idaho State. Conversely, Cal is in the top-100 in defensive rebounding. They should look like superstars versus this Bengals roster on the glass.
Cal should be able to pull away in this one, as their defense puts the clamps down on Idaho State. In a 76-58 final or thereabout, expect the Golden Bears to win and cover
