The 12-12 Hoosiers travel to East Lansing to take on the 13-10 Spartans in a game that features two teams limping through disappointing seasons and yet still possibly clinging to NCAA tournament hopes. Indiana has seen its tournament hopes dissipate in recent weeks, losing three in a row, most recently falling 73-57 on Saturday at home to No.2 Michigan. Michigan State is headed in the other direction. Winners of three of its last four, the Spartans have climbed back onto the tournament bubble. However, The Spartans ran into a roadblock on Sunday, losing 73-55 to Maryland on the road.

Indiana Hoosiers LogoThese two teams met on Jan. 20, when Michigan State started its hot streak by picking up a 78-71 win in Bloomington. Indiana squandered a double-digit second-half lead in that one, allowing the Spartans to score 52 second-half points. The Hoosiers’ leading scorer, Trayce Jackson-Davis, had a monster game, scoring 34 points and collecting nine rebounds. The Spartans got a big-time performance from their leading scorer as well, with Aaron Henry scoring 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field. The game was decided from beyond the three-point arc, where Michigan State shot over 40 percent and Indiana shot just 21 percent.

Michigan State Spartans LogoThe Spartans’ hot shooting that began in the second half of the earlier game against IU enabled them to generate a three-game winning streak, but they fell back down to earth on Sunday in the road loss at Maryland. Keep in mind that Indiana racked up 10 steals in the previous matchup and was able to make life miserable for the Spartans’ offense in the first half of that confrontation. Michigan State is unlikely to have another half where they shoot the ball as well in this game as they did in the second half of their last outing vs. Indiana. The Spartans might not have a half where they shoot that well for the rest of this entire season.

Please Note:
As much as people want you to believe that Tom Izzo figured something out and this edition of the Spartans will go on another Michigan State-type run in March, this team just is not talented enough to do so. Expect the Spartans’ shooting regression to carry over from Sunday and for Indiana to pick up a road win they so desperately need if they want to keep their own now-slim NCAA tournament hopes on life support.
The Bets
Indiana +3½
