The Iowa Hawkeyes and Purdue Boilermakers have a date in the Big Ten Championship in the late afternoon hours on Sunday. The Big Ten Championship is a yearly tradition of leading us into the Selection Show.
This year we have Iowa and Purdue in the conference championship, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Both schools progressed through the season and were two of the best in the Big Ten.

Neither won the Big Ten regular season, so we will have two different conference champions. There wasn’t a sole conference winner, with Illinois and Iowa splitting with a record of 15-5. Purdue had a better overall record than both at 27-6.
The Boilermakers enter the Big Ten Championship with three straight wins. Purdue concluded the regular season with a 69-67 win over the Indiana Hoosiers on March 5, then a 69-61 win against Penn State and 75-70 against Michigan State yesterday.
Jaden Ivey came through big in both tournament games, with 17 and 22 points through the first two attempts. He will need another productive game to overcome a quality Iowa team. The Hawkeyes were nearly as good as Purdue this season.

Iowa went 25-9 with a record of 12-8 in the Big Ten. They are hot with wins in eight of their previous nine outings. Their only loss during that stretch is a 2-point failure at Ilinois in a 74-72 final. Since losing to Michigan on February 17, 84-79, the loss versus Illinois is their worst.

Iowa vs. Purdue Prediction:
Purdue enters the Big Ten Championship as the favorite. That makes sense. They are seventh in the NCAA with 80.7 points per game and a 49.7% field goal percentage.
The Boilermakers had the most dangerous offense in the conference. However, it’s been the defense that has stepped up recently.
Purdue has scored fewer than 70 points in four of their last five games. That’s not what the numbers indicate with Purdue, but the offense hasn’t been as hot as early in the season.
Note that in their previous nine games, Purdue has scored more than 70 points in only one game, the win over the Spartans yesterday.
They’ve been involved in some nail-biters down the stretch. Purdue scored 69 points per game through their last five games while conceding 67.2 points a game.
Purdue may have to improve on that if they’re beating Iowa on Sunday. Iowa has heated up from the floor, as they’ve put in 86 points per game and a 50.8% field goal percentage in their previous five.
The Hawkeyes have been burning hot from three. Iowa has connected on a whopping 48% of their three-point attempts. If they keep shooting like this, it’s over.
Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Purdue Boilermakers Betting Trends:
- 5-1 ATS in their previous six games
- 5-2 ATS in their previous seven games as an underdog
- 13-4 ATS in their previous 17 games on a Sunday
- 5-1 ATS in their previous six games versus a team with a winning record
- 11-2 overall in their previous 13 games
- 0-6 ATS in their previous six games
- 1-8-2 ATS in their previous 11 games as a betting favorite
- 0-4-2 ATS in their previous six games after a win
- 0-5-2 ATS in their previous seven games versus a team with a winning record
- The favorite is 2-5 ATS in their previous seven games versus Iowa
Purdue has scored this season, but Iowa can, too, and they’ve been the hotter team recently.
The Hawkeyes are the fifth-best team in the NCAA, with 84 points per game. They have shot 46.5% from the field going into the Big Ten Championship.

The defense is a few points behind Purdue with 71.4 points against per game, but still serviceable given how dangerous they’ve been shooting the ball.
I’m not that confident in laying points in a matchup like this between two even sides. Iowa has actually been the better team recently as well. In a game that could go down to the final possession, having 2.5 points looks like a good deal.
