The Iowa State Cyclones and TCU Horned Frogs are scheduled to meet at Schollmaier Arena on Tuesday night in the Big 12. The Big 12 is dominated by the Baylor Bears at the top of the standings. There isn’t a team in the Big 12 that can touch Baylor. Then again, there may not be a team that can hang with Baylor in the country not named Gonzaga. And if Baylor and Gonzaga were playing today, I’m backing Baylor likely as a small underdog on a neutral court.
There is a big gap between Baylor and everyone else in the conference. If you want an even bigger gap, go ahead and check out the West Coast Conference with Gonzaga and the rest. The Pac-12 doesn’t want Gonzaga because they don’t have a football program, but it would be much better to see the Bulldogs in a bigger conference. That said, Gonzaga would roll over the Pac-12 in their current form. In the Big 12, the rest of the conference is going to have to hope the committee likes their resume.
The Big 12 has a lot of good teams, but only one great school that has a good chance of going to the Final Four. Seven other teams are looking for a bid into the NCAA Tournament. You can forget about Iowa State and Kansas State, but the others are in a position where they can finish strong and put together a solid enough resume. It’s going to come down to the wire for most of these schools. The Horned Frogs have the worst record at 10-7 out of the seven programs below Baylor. West Virginia, 13-5, Oklahoma, 12-5, and Texas Tech, 14-5, are all in contention to finish behind the Bears in the regular season standings.
It’s been an ugly season for the Cyclones. Their campaign has been one of the ugliest in recent memory. They are just ready to pack things up and go into the offseason right now. Iowa State is coming off a 79-72 loss on the road against the Oklahoma Sooners. Pretty good effort, but they ran out of steam late. The Cyclones head to Texas Christian with a frustrating record of 2-11. They’re on a seven-game losing streak, with their only wins against Arkansas Pine Bluff, 80-63, to open the season on November 29, and a 60-45 loss against Jackson State on December 20. Head below for our free Iowa State vs. TCU pick on February 9, 2021.
Iowa State Cyclones vs. TCU Horned Frogs NCAA Betting Odds:
Iowa State vs. TCU Prediction:
Iowa State wants to find one more win before their season comes to a close, though they could be an underdog in every one of those games. I could see an upset against Kansas, Texas, or Oklahoma, but it also wouldn’t surprise me if they lose all three. A home game against TCU to close out the year could be their best opportunity for another win.
They have the Horned Frogs on the road tonight where the Cyclones have a chance for a win in an underdog role. Iowa State goes into TCU winless in four attempts on the road. The Cyclones have gotten thrashed on the road defensively. They haven’t offered any resistance at all with 85.4 points against per game.
Overall, Iowa State is 312th in the nation with 77.2 points against per game. They’ve struggled mightily defending the rim. Bigger and more athletic teams are having a field day against the Cyclones. In past years when they’ve had a poor defense, the offense has been able to make up for their deficiencies defensively. Teams are shooting 53.2% from the field against TCU over their last five outings.
Iowa State has scored 67.4 points per game for 274th in the NCAA, so not nearly enough to erase their issues on the defensive end. TCU recently ended a five-game losing streak with a 81-78 win over Oklahoma State at home. Despite that being a five-game losing streak, give the Horned Frogs credit for covering against Kansas on the road, 59-51, and pushing No. 10 Missouri to the brink in overtime. TCU shot 52.3% against Missouri and Oklahoma State in their previous two performances.
They might have lost against the Tigers, 102-98, but that was a heck of an effort and TCU saw no letdown in their win over Oklahoma State on Saturday. TCU has covered each of their last three games, keeping the Kansas and Missouri game much closer than people expected. If the Horned Frogs. The Horned Frogs need this game badly, while Iowa State is just trying to avoid greater embarrassment. Expect Iowa State to fight hard in this one, but likely come up short in a 75-67 or 73-63 game to lose and fail to cover.
