There is a big college basketball card on Saturday, with non-stop action from early in the day to late in the evening. There are a total of 19 ranked teams playing on Saturday, leaving on six Top 25 schools off the Saturday slate. Ohio State and Wiscinson might be the most highly anticipated matchup today. I’m excited to see what transpires in the UConn and Creighton game as well. UConn have looked good this season, but if they can prove themselves on the road at No. 11 Creighton, then the Huskies might be a squad to pay attention to. UConn goes into Saturday ranked No. 23 in the country after entering the season on no one’s radar.
Along with Ohio State and Wisconsin scheduled to play today, there is one more ranked team from the Big Ten on the card as well. The Minnesota Golden Gophers invite the Maryland Terrapins to Williams Arena on Saturday afternoon. It’s a matchup that isn’t going to get much attention on a day that has packed with a full card, but if you like Big Ten basketball, this is a game that should catch your attention. Minnesota is one of those teams where the verdict is out on. You will hear from some people that believe the Golden Gophers are a very good team, and others believe they might be on the overrated side.
Beating the Michigan Wolverines doesn’t happen by chance. I don’t think they’re overrated in the least and deserve to be ranked No. 17 in the NCAA. There is only one team that has been good enough to beat the Wolverines this season and that team is the Golden Gophers. Minnesota hasn’t played since beating Michigan last week on January 16. The Golden Gophers didn’t win because of a fluke. They controlled that game and emerged with a 75-57 win at home. It was a nice response by Minnesota after a 82-57 loss against Michigan in Ann Arbor, and a 86-71 loss in Iowa City against the Hawkeyes.
Maryland travel to Minnesota and go to a place where the Golden Gophers have been very good. The Terrapins will need an A+ effort on Saturday afternoon to leave Minnesota with a win. Maryland is coming off a 87-63 loss against Michigan, as the Wolverines responded following their loss. Maryland has a hallmark win in their portfolio after going to Illinois and beating the Fighting Illini, 66-63, on January 10. They will need a strong finish to garner NCAA Tournament attention, though. Maryland enters Saturday with a record of 8-7. Head below for our free Maryland vs. Minnesota pick on January 23, 2021.
Maryland Terrapins vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers NCAA Betting Odds:
Maryland vs. Minnesota Prediction:
Maryland has had a choppy season so far. It’s hard to tell if they’re coming or going. They have shown up big in spots on the road, so we have to acknowledge them for their effort against Wisconsin and Illinois. The Terrapins went on the road on December 28 and beat No. 10 Wisconsin, 70-64. More recently on January 10, Maryland topped No. 22 Illinois on the road by a score of 66-63.
Then there has been bad Maryland, where they’ve lost to Rutgers and Indiana. The Terrapins have largely been below average on the road despite their wins over Wisconsin and Illinois. Note that Maryland has scored an average of just 62.5 points per game as opposed to 73 points per game overall. Overall, Minnesota is 61st in the NCAA with 78.8 points scored per game. At home, that goes up to a whopping 84.5 points per game.
This is the same Golden Gophers that manhandled a very good Michigan team at home last week. They’ve also beaten Ohio State at home by a score of 77-60. In other impressive wins in Minnesota, the Golden Gophers blew out Michigan State, 81-56, and a very nice 102-95 win over Iowa.
Minnesota has yet to lose at home, as they enter Saturday with a record of 11-0. Defeating Iowa and Michigan is not easy, but Minnesota were able to rise up to the challenge and win in impressive fashion. If they bring the same form to the party tonight, expect Minnesota to pull away for a win and cover in this one.
