Memphis Tigers vs. Houston Cougars Pick – AAC Championship March 13, 2022

The Memphis Tigers and Houston Cougars meet in a familiar matchup for the AAC Championship. Memphis and Houston played twice this season, with the Tigers coming out ahead in both instances, 69-59 and 75-61.

In the AAC Championship last year, it was a close one, with the Cougars unable to kick away from the Tigers in a 76-74 final. It’s the fourth straight game that has been decided by 3 points or a Houston win.

Memphis is lengthy and athletic. It’s bothered Houston, a team that has steamrolled past the rest of the competition in the AAC. The Tigers have figured the Cougs out, but we’ll see if it can continue on Sunday in the 2022 ACC Championship.

Houston was an easy winner on Saturday, as they pulled away from Tulane for a 86-66 win. The game went pretty well as expected. Houston was too much for the Green Wave, who were well outmatched in that contest.

The Cougars had a big performance from Kyler Edwards, as he put in 20 points and recorded 7 rebounds in the winning effort. Forward Josh Carlton chipped in with 16 points and 6 rebounds for Houston.

Memphis enters this one on a six-game winning streak after fending off a pesky SMU Mustangs team for a 70-63 victory. SMU had a good season and it was no surprise the Mustangs gave the Tigers a solid game.

Memphis vs. Houston Prediction:

Memphis’ athleticism has given Houston fits over the last two years. The Tigers are essentially the same team talent-wise from last year and the Cougars couldn’t figure it out.

Memphis went on the road to beat Houston, 69-59, and then made it look easier at home in a 75-61 win on March 6. Houston beat Memphis in the AAC Championship last year, though that was close.

The Cougs did not cover that 7-point spread in the AAC Championship a year back. In fact, they haven’t covered the spread versus Memphis in seven straight games. Memphis has covered in nine of their previous ten attempts.

Houston has a terrific defense, but Memphis has figured out how to beat their defensive sets. The Tigers have scored 69 and 75 points in their last two games.

Overall, they’ve netted 76.1 points per game on 47.3% shooting for 34th in the NCAA. They can score and do it versus a defense that no one has been able to crack.

Across their previous five games, Memphis has scored 76.8 points per game and a 47.7% field goal percentage. The defense has been the most impressive signal for Memphis, though.

During that time, they gave up 62.8 points per game and a 38.9% field goal percentage. It isn’t a mistake for Memphis, as they held teams to a 39.5% field goal percentage for 22nd in the country this season.

Memphis Tigers vs. Houston Cougars Betting Trends:

  • 10-2 ATS in their previous 12 games
  • 5-1-1 ATS in their previous seven games as an underdog on a neutral court
  • 7-0 ATS in their previous seven games as an underdog
  • 12-2 ATS in their previous 14 games in March
  • The underdog is 10-1 ATS in their previous 11 games versus Houston
  • 2-4 ATS in their previous six games on a Sunday
  • The favorite is 1-10 ATS in their previous 11 games versus Memphis
  • 1-9 ATS in their previous ten games versus Memphis
  • 8-1 overall in their previous nine games versus the AAC
  • UNDER is 4-1-1 in their previous six games

Houston has the stats to back up supporting them on Sunday. However, the fact still remains that Memphis has been their Achilles heel.

The Tigers know their defense and there isn’t much that Houston can do to fool them at this point. In another Memphis-Houston game that should go down to the wire, it’s hard not to like the points.
