Merrimack Warriors vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs Pick – NCAAB December 9, 2021

The Gonzaga Bulldogs will look to get back on track after another rare loss. Gonzaga were dropped to 7-2 on the season following a 91-82 loss against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Seattle on Saturday night.

Alabama is a team to keep tabs on this season and into March. They can shoot the lights out and are capable of beating any team with their three-guard combo. When those three are feeling ON, Alabama can beat the top ranked teams in the country.

They might need to establish some kind of defensive identity before writing them in as a Final Four contender. Running and gunning only works for so long without a reliable defense in the NCAA Tournament, but they’re not a team to get into a run and gun game with.

Gonzaga couldn’t get a big stop late in the 4th quarter, while the Crimson Tide kept knocking down big shot after big shot. This is the second loss for Gonzaga in their last three attempts. Even in their win, they looked bad in a 64-55 loss versus Tarleton State last week.

That loss against the Duke Blue Devils in Las Vegas, 84-81, must have taken something out of their sail. Prior to that loss, Gonzaga looked so good in a 83-63 win over the UCLA Bruins at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There’s talent on the Bulldogs, they just have to get some of their confidence back. They are going to be NCAA Tournament contenders despite this early season slip up. Can Gonzaga get it back against Merrimack on Thursday night?

Merrimack, located in North Andover, Massachusetts, is going into tonight with a record of 4-6. They are losers in four of their last five games. Maybe if they take a page out of the Tarleton State page, the Warriors can hang around enough to make Gonzaga look bad again.

Merrimack vs. Gonzaga Prediction:

Merrimack is looking for a bounce back spot of their own on Thursday night. It wasn’t a loss against a team like Alabama, though. The Warriors were chased off the floor by Ivy League Brown, 76-56.

Brown were just 2-point favorites in that one, but ran away from an offensively deficient Merrimack squad. Merrimack has zero offensive sense on their team.

They rate near the back of the NCAA in offensive production. Merrimack isn’t going to run anyone off the floor, so Gonzaga doesn’t have to worry about a repeat like against Alabama on Saturday.

The Warriors are 354th in the nation with 57 points scored per game this season. There are 358 teams in D1, so they are one of the worst scoring teams in the country. Something is seriously wrong with Gonzaga if they can’t pull away in this one.

Merrimack Warriors vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs Betting Trends:

  • 0-7-1 ATS in their previous eight games versus a team with a winning percentage better than 60%
  • 1-7-1 ATS in their previous nine games versus a team with a winning record
  • 1-5-1 ATS in their previous seven games as an underdog
  • 1-4-1 ATS in their previous six games versus a team with a winning home record
  • UNDER is 22-5 in their previous 27 games on the road

  • 4-1 ATS in their previous five games after a loss
  • 5-2 ATS in their previous seven games versus a team with a losing road record
  • 1-4 ATS in their previous four games at Gonzaga
  • UNDER is 5-2 in their previous seven games after covering the spread
  • UNDER is 7-1 in their previous eight games versus a team with a winning percentage worse than 40%

Merrimack basketball wasn’t a thing four years ago. They have only been around for three seasons, so some patience is going to be required. Their defense has been fine with 59.9 points against per game.

However, they haven’t played anything close to an offense like Gonzaga. Army, Virginia Tech, and Brown all got into the 70’s against Merrimack.

I’m sure that the Bulldogs can pile it on tonight. The Bulldogs are seventh in the NCAA with 86.2 points scored per game, and second with a field goal percentage of 53.3%.

Merrimack has struggled against the three, as opponents are shooting well with a 35.4% three-point percentage. That’s good for 285th against the three.

Size and thus rebounding is a problem for the Warriors. They are 358th, dead last on the offensive boards, and 328th in defensive rebounding in the nation.

If Gonzaga can’t cover this big number, Mark Few has to start looking at himself and effort from his team. If Gonzaga wants to, and I think they will after a slow stretch recently, covering 32.5 points against Merrimack is attainable. Look for a 85-48 win for Gonzaga tonight.
