The 8-6 Spartans travel to Iowa City to take on the 12-4 Hawkeyes Tuesday night in a game they desperately need to win to keep their NCAA tournament hopes alive. Michigan State has lost three straight and six of its last eight games to place those hopes in jeopardy. The Spartans had lofty preseason expectations, as they always do under Coach Tom Izzo, but they currently sit in 13th place in the Big Ten conference standings. Most recently, Michigan State lost 79-62 at Ohio State on Sunday. Iowa has also has hit a bump in the road, albeit a much smaller one, while losing its last two games against Indiana and Illinois, respectively.

Iowa Hawkeyes LogoThe Spartans are led by forward Aaron Henry who averages 13.1 points per game. The preseason thought was that Marquette transfer Joey Hauser would help relieve some of the stress on Henry, but that scenario has failed to unfold on most nights. Hauser has scored double figures just once in the team’s last six games. Iowa is led by Luke Garza, a 2019 All-American and runner-up for Associated Press Player of the Year. Garza has lived up to the preseason hype, leading the nation in scoring average by more than four points, at 26.4 per game. Garza also leads the Hawkeyes in rebounds per game with 8.6.

Michigan State Spartans LogoMichigan State is drowning. The Spartans are 3-11 against the spread this season and 1-9 against the spread in their last 10 games. Iowa, currently ranked eighth in the nation, is fresh off of back-to-back losses and the Hawkeyes will be more like sharks in the water smelling blood against these Spartans in their vulnerable state. Iowa is coming back home and looking to take out its frustration on someone and it just so happens Michigan State is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Expect this one to get ugly early and stay ugly throughout. Take the Hawkeyes blow the Spartans out and easily cover the 10-point spread.
