We have a handful of college basketball games scheduled for Martin Luther King Day on Monday. It’s also a day that features all day NHL and NBA action, from the afternoon into the evening. The first college game is expected to be UNC Wilmington and Towson at 2:00 p.m. EST.
Then New Mexico and UNLV will finish off the day at 6:30 p.m. PST out west in Las Vegas. The vast majority of games are a lot of small conference ball, but there is one mega matchup to keep tabs on. The Kansas Jayhawks and Baylor Bears meet in Texas on Monday night at Baylor University in Waco.
There are three ranked teams scheduled to play on Monday, with UConn and Louisville joining Kansas and Baylor today. Kansas is the No. 6 team in the country, while Baylor is still holding strong behind Gonzaga at No. 2, so that’s by far the most interesting game on the docket today.
Baylor is a really good team, and Kansas should be overpowered in that game. They will have to beat Kansas by more than 9 points to cover that spread, though. Not the easiest task against a quality Kansas team. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bears pick up the win and cover at home.
The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils and Southern Jaguars are the furthest thing from a big game on Monday. However, it means absolutely nothing when it comes to making bets and money. It’s important to keep that in mind with the Super Bowl approaching. Just because it’s the Super Bowl doesn’t mean you have to go wild and bet more units than usual.
There could be a better angle elsewhere in a game nobody cares about. Nobody must care about this one, which features the 0-11 Delta Devils and 2-4 Jaguars. As mediocre as Southern has been, Mississippi Valley State has been putrid in 2020-21. They are getting a lot of points to work with, though, so we’ll see if they can be good enough to cover on Monday. Head below for our free Mississippi Valley State vs. Southern pick on January 18, 2021.
Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils vs. Southern Jaguars NCAA Betting Odds:
Mississippi Valley State vs. Southern Prediction:
Mississippi Valley State has been a punching bag for every team that has challenged them this season. They are still searching for their first win, and are one of the worst teams in the country on both sides of the floor. In their latest defeat, the Delta Devils were beaten up by a score of 71-59 against Alcorn State. To exemplify how bad Mississippi Valley State has been in 2020-21, they opened the season with an embarrassing 142-62 loss against an average Arkansas team.
Put this Delta Devils team up against Gonzaga and it might result in a historic loss if the Bulldogs cared to embarrass them. The good news is that Mississippi Valley State only lost by 64-51 against the Alabama State Hornets. That’s the closest game that the Delta Devils have been involved in this season.
They aren’t dead last in the NCAA offensively with regard to points scored per game, but are pretty close. Mississippi Valley State has scored an average of 55.5 points per game for 343rd in the NCAA. With 347 teams in the nation, that’s almost as bad as you can get.
Mississippi Valley State is the worst team in the country regarding defense. The Delta Devils have gotten nailed for 93.7 points against per game. That is 347th in the NCAA. No other team in the country has allowed more points than Mississippi State Valley. Along with 93.7 points a game conceded, opposing teams are hitting at a clip of 51.9%.
Southern has been in better form after losing their first four games. They beat Grambling State, 61-55, as small underdogs, and then blew out Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 88-53. For comparison, Arkansas-Pine Bluff is a team that stomped on Mississippi Valley State by a score of 92-52. That wasn’t a competitive game, though Southern had no issues versus the same team. This is more of a play against Mississippi Valley State than anything.
