University of South Carolina-Upstate Spartans (4-10) at #25 University of Creighton Blue Jays (9-2)
I brought you a third consecutive NCAA Men’s basketball winner last night when I was on Georgia at home against Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs dominated and coasted to the easy victory and the cover. We will look to make it four in a row tonight as we zero in on yet another non-conference game when the University of South Carolina-Upstate Spartans play at the Creighton Blue Jays.
The University of South Carolina-Upstate Spartans will travel to Omaha, Nebraska to play the Blue Jays of Creighton. USC comes into this matchup with a 4-10 record on the year, having won their last game against Coastal Georgia, snapping a six-game losing streak.
Creighton finds itself back in the top twenty-five this week after beating a very game Texas-Arlington team in their last game, the Blue Jays are winners of four straight. The Blue Jays are -27.5-point home favorites. The game total over-under is set at 163.5 points. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM PST from the CenturyLink Center in Omaha.
Creighton is amongst the best scoring teams in all the land. They can hang 90 points plus on any team, on any given night. The Blue Jays regularly break the century mark in games and play a hyper-aggressive and fast pace offense that sees shots getting jacked up from anywhere as soon as they cross the half court line.
Creighton’s two losses on the year are both very defendable as they lost to Gonzaga and Baylor, two teams that are certain to still be playing meaningful games in March. The aspect that I am going to focus in on this matchup is the Blue Jays ability to run it up against subpar competition, like they will be facing tonight against USC.
Creighton has played its fair share of cupcakes so far, this season. Games against Yale where they won by 26 points, against Alcorn State when they dominated by 37 points, and SIU-Edwardsville and North Dakota that saw them win by more than 40.
This team is very accustomed to playing weak competition and blowing them out. Occasionally a good team will play down to his poor competition. Not Creighton. They score so easily that when they are playing a team that can’t keep up, they can run up the score in a hurry.
You saw a glimpse of this in the first half against UT-Arlington. The Mavericks are a very solid team that is led by one of the best players in the county in Kevin Hervey. The Mavericks came out a bit slow on the offensive end in the first half, and Creighton jumped out to a 25-point first half lead. It just goes to show you how quickly the Blue Jays can jump all over you, even against a good team. The USC-Upstate Spartans are not a good team.
There isn’t a lot that can be said that’s any good about the USC Spartans. Most of you probably didn’t even know the team existed before reading this article, and I suspect you will forget about them as soon as you cash your ticket against them tonight. The Spartans have played a schedule chalked full of bad teams, most of which they have lost against.
The four wins on the year for USC are against Paine, Allen, Abilene Christian, and Coastal Georgia. If I told you I made up one of those school’s names you probably wouldn’t be able to tell if I am joking or not.
Against a decent team in Kansas State two weeks ago they lost by 37 points. They lost by 19 to Campbell, 15 to Denver, and 15 to Jacksonville State. They are playing mostly very bad teams and are struggling to stay competitive.
The Blue Jays have won twenty-one consecutive home non-conference games. Creighton doesn’t like bringing in teams to their home floor to lose. The Spartans are 0-8 on the road this year. As you can see we have a bit of a trend here. Creighton is going to win. That is obvious. But can they cover the giant number of 27.5? You will very rarely see me touch a number that is anywhere near this big.
There are just so many things that can go wrong when you spot one side almost thirty points. Maybe they jump out to a huge lead and coast to a twenty-point victory. Maybe the opposing squad gets hot for a six-minute stretch, that’s all it takes to cover a number this big.
But I just think this Creighton team is one that prides itself on scoring fast and often, and they have shown this year that they aren’t going to let up on a team when they are down. They don’t change how they play on offense no matter what the score might be.
So, yeah, I am going to lay a whole lot of wood tonight and expect a massive blow out. It wouldn’t shock me at all if the Blue Jays had this number covered at the half. These teams are just a complete mismatch, and I don’t see any way the Spartans hold the Blue Jays under 100 points. Give me the Creighton Blue Jays in a slobber knocker tonight from Omaha!
