Nebraska Omaha Mavericks vs. UNLV Rebels Pick – NCAAB December 15, 2021

The Nebraska Omaha Mavericks and UNLV Rebels are at the Thomas & Mack Center on Wednesday night in Las Vegas. If you’ve flown into Las Vegas, then you’ve probably driven past the Thomas & Mack Center.

It’s home of the UNLV basketball team, who look to advance to 7-5 on the year tonight. They’ve been great in spots, including a decent effort against the Michigan Wolverines in a 74-61 loss, and then a 74-73 loss to Wichita State in their next attempt.

They’ve already played Michigan, Wichita State, and UCLA this season. It has been a tough schedule so far, with the strength of schedule certainly turned up considerably for the Rebels.

Nebraska Omaha has had some tough schools on their schedule as well. However, the Mavericks didn’t come close on the road against Texas Tech, 96-40, and Purdue, 97-40. If Texas Tech and Purdue wanted to win by more, they probably could have.

In UNLV’s defense, they put up a fight against their top tier opponents. They are coming off a 95-78 win over Hartford on Saturday. This after an easy 76-56 win as 5-point favorites against Seattle.

UNLV seeks to cover three in a row on Wednesday night. The Mavericks have won just one game in ten outings this season. They’re on a nine-game losing streak, covering only one of their last seven attempts.

Nebraska Omaha are back on the road for the first time since a 97-40 loss on November 26 to Purdue. They failed to find a win on their four-game homestand, with a 78-70 loss versus Drake their best effort.

Nebraska Omaha vs. UNLV Prediction:

Nebraska Omaha hasn’t put in much effort when they have to travel outside of the state. They have been abysmal with five losses on five attempts. Omaha is bad at home as well, but at least there has been effort in spots.

There hasn’t been a whole lot of effort in their trips on the road. The Mavericks have scored just 52 points per game, while allowing an average of 82.6 points per game as a visitor this season.

Overall, they rank towards the back of the NCAA in both offense and defense, so it just gets ratcheted up to a new level on the road. They’ve scored an average of 61.6 points per game for 335th in the country.

The Mavericks are connecting at a lackluster success rate of 38.6% from the field. With no inside or outside game, Omaha is left trying to figure it out on the fly.

They’ve also struggled defensively, nearly last in the NCAA at preventing points. Nebraska Omaha has allowed 80.2 points per game, while teams are shooting 48.2% and 40.3% from three against them.

Nebraska Omaha Mavericks vs. UNLV Rebels Betting Trends:

Nebraska Omaha

  • 1-6 ATS in their previous seven games
  • 1-6 ATS in their previous seven games as an underdog
  • 0-9 overall in their previous nine games
  • OVER is 4-1 in their previous five games
  • OVER is 6-0 in their previous six games after a double-digit loss at Nebraska Omaha

  • 4-0 ATS in their previous five games versus a team with a losing record at UNLV
  • 4-0 ATS in their previous five games versus a team with a winning percentage below 40%
  • 15-7 ATS in their previous 22 games versus a team with a losing record
  • <li13-0 overall in their previous 13 games versus the Summit League

  • 3-8 ATS in their previous 11 games

UNLV has been up and down this season, though I can’t fault their effort against the good teams they’ve played. They hung around against Michigan and Wichita State, and have blown out the weaker opponents.

The Rebels’ defense should be adequate enough to contain a Nebraska Omaha team that doesn’t know how to shoot from anywhere on the floor. UNLV has conceded an average of 67.1 points per game for 158th in the NCAA.

At the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, opponents have netted just 60.6 points per game versus the Rebels. They’ve scored an average of 72.3 points per game, while shooting 42.7% at home.

I don’t believe the level of interest is going to be too high for Nebraska Omaha on this trip to Las Vegas. That’s been the case in all of their other road games, and I can’t see how going to Vegas helps.

Look for UNLV to pull away and bury the Mavericks in the second-half. I’m looking at a 78-55 win and cover for UNLV in this one tonight.
