The 12-9 Wolfpack travel to South Bend, Indiana on Wednesday night to take on the 9-13 Fighting Irish. North Carolina State has won four games in a row, most recently defeating Pittsburgh 65-62 on Sunday afternoon. Notre Dame is headed in the other direction, losing three in a row, including a 94-90 loss at lowly Boston College on Saturday. The Wolfpack are led by forward Jericole Hellems, who has scored double figures in 11 of their last 12 games. Hellems had a big game on Saturday, recording 15 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Pitt.
The Irish have five players that averaging in double figures this season, with guard Prentiss Hubb scoring 28 points in Saturday’s loss to Boston College. Defense has been the issue with the Irsh, especially of late. BC registered a season-high 94 points against Notre Dame while shooting 52 percent from the field and 47 percent from three-point range. Obviously the Eagles had hot hands, but also many of their shots came uncontested.
Notre Dame has been favored in only six games all season, but has won five of those six contests. While the Wolfpack have won three straight in the all-time series against the Irish, head coach Mike Brey seems confident his team to turn it around against N.C. State. Brey called the game against Boston College “the ultimate trap game” in his postgame interview (according to ACC Network). A veteran Notre Dame team should have a renewed sense of focus as they return home for two final home games to close out the season.
