Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Iowa State Cyclones Pick – NCAAB March 2, 2022

The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Iowa State Cyclones meet for a Big 12 matchup in Ames on Wednesday night. Oklahoma State is running on fumes at the moment, as they need a miracle turnaround to reach the NCAA Tournament.

A miracle turnaround as in go and win the Big 12 Tournament to guarantee a seat. The biggest problem for Oklahoma State is that they play in this conference. The Big 12 is ultra-tough, and Oklahoma State is just a step behind.

They aren’t a bad team, either. In another conference, Oklahoma State would likely be better than 13-15. Going into tonight, Oklahoma State is 6-10 in the conference. They are coming off two heartbreaking losses in overtime.

The first of two might have been the dagger for their NCAA Tournament hopes. Beat the Baylor Bears in that one, and there would have been life. Instead, Oklahoma State lost, 66-64, and then did the same against Oklahoma, 66-62.

Brutal for Oklahoma State after beating Kansas State in overtime, 82-79. They are coming off three straight overtimes and have to be exhausted mentally at this point.

After two crushing losses that probably take them out of the NCAA Tournament, we’ll see what they have tonight. Iowa State is going into tonight with a record of 20-9 and 7-9 in the Big 12.

They are on the heels of a 74-73 win at Kansas State. The Cyclones are hot right now, with four straight wins entering tonight. Two of which were as underdogs against TCU and Kansas State.

Oklahoma State vs. Iowa State Prediction:

Oklahoma State has to feel defeated at this point. They had one of the best teams in the conference on the ropes, allowed Baylor to escape, and then let one go of a beatable Oklahoma team in overtime.

Team morale has to be low after putting it all out there in what was likely a last-ditch effort to get recognition from the NCAA committee. Now they will almost certainly have to do it the long way in the Big 12 Tournament.

I don’t have the most confidence in Oklahoma State figuring it out for a deep run. Their defense is slightly above average, but that’s about all. Oklahoma State doesn’t have the firepower to match up with teams, especially not on their home floor.

The Cowboys are 221st in the NCAA, with 69.5 points scored per game. They are connecting at a 43.8% clip from the field in 211th. In a game dominated by sharpshooters from three, Oklahoma State doesn’t have the ability to keep up.

Oklahoma State is shooting an anemic 30.1% from three for 334th in the NCAA. The Cowboys are connecting at a 28.9% clip from three on the road with just 64.4 points per game. That’s not going to work in this era of basketball.

Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Iowa State Cyclones Betting Trends:

Oklahoma State
  • 0-3-2 ATS in their previous five games on the road
  • 6-14-2 ATS in their previous 22 games
  • The underdog is 2-8 ATS in their previous ten games versus Iowa State
  • 3-7 ATS in their previous ten games
  • 0-5 ATS in their five games on the road
Iowa State
  • 5-1 ATS in their previous six games versus a team with a losing record on the road
  • 14-4 overall in their previous 18 games at home
  • 8-2 overall in their previous ten games at home versus Oklahoma State
  • 6-13 ATS in their previous 19 games as a betting favorite
  • UNDER is 6-3 in their previous nine games

Expect Iowa State to lock the Cowboys up in this one. The Cyclones may not have the most dangerous offense. They are scoring 69.7 points per game and a 45.4% field goal percentage at home.

However, their defense isn’t to be messed with, and I think their physical pressure will be the difference on the scoreboard.

Iowa State allows only 59.4 points per game and a 41.2% FGA at home this season. Despite two overtime sessions in their last two outings, Oklahoma State scored 64 and 62 points.

They’ve scored 64 or fewer points in three of their previous four attempts. In their first meeting this season, Iowa State gave up 81 points in overtime on the road.

However, they still picked up an 84-81 win in an impressive offensive display. The Cowboys haven’t been the strongest defensively, especially on the road with 70.6 points against per game with a 40.6% FGA.

I’m on Iowa State to edge ahead in the second-half. Oklahoma State has to be demoralized after back-to-back losses in overtime to likely pop their bubble.
