Last Time Out:
After having three games cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols and a win over UTSA, Oklahoma opened it’s Big 12 schedule with an 82-78 win over TCU in Fort Worth. The Sooners were led by 32 points, nine assists and six rebounds from Austin Reaves. They also shot 54.2 percent from the field in the second half as they erased a 9-point deficit.
Paul Scruggs scored 20 points to lead the Musketeers to a 77-69 win over Cincinnati in the Sky-Line Chili Crosstown Shootout on Sunday. Xavier closed on a 19-7 run after trailing the Bearcats 62-58 with 6:59 to play. Coach Travis Steele welcomed guard Adam Kunkel to his lineup after the NCAA approved his waiver of transfer from Belmont. Freshmen Colby Jones and C.J. Wilcher joined the team after being in quarantine since the before the season’s first game.
The scoring tandem of forward Brady Manek and Austin Reaves is going to be a bear for Oklahoma’s opponents all season. Manek had a 29-point outing in the win over UTSA as he hit eight triples. Right now, the Sooners’ roaster has three of the Big 12’s top four scorers in Manek (21.5 ppg), Reaves (20.0 ppg.) and dynamic point guard De’Vion Harmon (17.5 ppg). Harmon has shot 65 percent from the floor in his first two games as the coaching staff wanted to emphasize improvement in that area over last season. Oklahoma is 33-6 in it’s last 39 non-conference games.
The Musketeers have four players averaging in double figures as Zach Freemantle leads at 17.2 points per game. Senior Paul Scruggs is Xavier’s catalyst as he averages 13.7 points and 7.0 assists per game, which ties him for the lead in the Big East. Scruggs sets the tone with his defense as well in averaging 1.8 steals over the first six games. It will definitely e interesting to see how Oklahoma’s Reaves gets his shots if Scruggs indeed draws the assignment. The Muskeeteers’ six opponents have only shot 34.7 percent on the season.
Winner: Xavier (+2½) 77, Oklahoma 72
