Saint Joseph’s closed on a 15-5 run to win their first game of the season over Albany U, 67-64, on Saturday. Taylor Funk had 14 points and six rebounds as the Hawks shot a season best 51.9 percent.
The Wildcats dropped an 89-78 overtime loss to Dayton on Friday night after Kellan Grady hit a step-back 3-pointer off the right side with 3.3 seconds remaining to tie the game at 72-72 and force overtime. Grady finished with 27 points while Luka Brajkovic had 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Billy Lange enters his second season of a major rebuild on Hawk Hill as the Hawks have struggled all season on both ends of the ball. When you play Davidson, the first order of business is to stop the Wildcats’ 3-ball attack which is led by the backcourt triplicate of Grady (17.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg), Hyunjung Lee (15.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and Carter Collins (14.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg). The Hawks’s 3-point defense has been shredded for 36.7 percent on the season. Leading scorer Ryan Daly (17.8 ppg/5 games) is questionable with a thumb injury while missing the Hawks’ last four games.
Coach Bob McKillop is in his 30th season at Davidson and is on the ballot as a Naismith Hall of Fame nominee. His use of International players and a sturdy 3-point offense has been a pilar of his career. Grady, Lee and Collins combine to average 46 points per game as they have made 76 of the Wildcats’ 3-point field goals.
