The San Diego State Aztecs and Utah State Aggies meet in what should be one of the better college basketball matchups on Thursday night. San Diego State travels to Utah with a record of 9-2. They are coming off three straight wins over Colorado State and Nevada twice. Their two wins have been against BYU and Colorado State. The loss against Colorado State was a close one on January 2, 70-67, and they were able to respond nicely for a 78-65 win over the Rams.
In their other loss, San Diego State were 72-62 losers against BYU at home. San Diego State looks like a bubble team. Good team, but they’re going to have to play well down the stretch to get enough attention. The way I see it, San Diego State is a First Four team at the moment. Boise State has been playing great basketball, and might be too tough to beat for the Mountain West Conference.
If they can, it’s likely they enter the tournament as a No. 11 seed. San Diego State will need to get hot at the right time to go deep into the NCAA Tournament. It’s possible, and the Aztecs might be good for two or three upsets if they hit their stride. I don’t feel as confidently in Utah State as I did in San Diego State. In any event, Utah State has been solid with a record of 9-3.
They are coming off eight straight wins and looking for more against a worthy opponent. My only concern with Utah State is that they haven’t beaten anyone yet. Beating up on a bunch of non contenders isn’t impressive. A win over San Diego State would be their signature win of the season thus far. San Diego State Aztecs vs. Utah State Aggies NCAA Betting Odds:
San Diego State vs. Utah State Prediction:
San Diego State will look to smother Utah State with their elite defense on Thursday night. The Aztecs may not be an elite team overall, but their defense is good and can get after an offense. San Diego State has conceded just 60.7 points per game for 15th in the NCAA. That dips on the road to 68 points per game, but still respectable, and their offense has scored more on road trips. The Aztecs are netting an average of 80 points per game as visitors in the 2020-21 campaign.
Utah State edges San Diego State out in that regard, with 81.8 points scored a game. Let’s back up a minute regarding the Aggies, though. Their schedule has been incredibly weak. The last time they played a solid team, Utah State lost against BYU, 67-64, on December 5. Their winning streak has largely been a reflection of their opponents.
Since losing that game, Utah State has beaten College of Idaho, Northern Colorado, San Jose State, Air Force, and New Mexico. All of those teams are not going to the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies beat New Mexico easily, 77-45 and 82-46, but they are going to find this outing much tougher on Thursday night. It’s hard not to like the points in this game. The pressure from the San Diego State defense is likely going to be too tough. They haven’t experienced anything like this defense in a long time. Expect that to be the difference tonight in Logan.
