San Diego Toreros vs. Portland Pilots Pick – NCAAB March 4, 2022

The San Diego Toreros and Portland Pilots have a West Coast Conference Tournament meeting at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

This is taking place at the Orleans Casino just off the Las Vegas Strip. If you’re in town, it’s cheap entertainment for a conference tournament game.

The general consensus here in the West Coast Conference is that there isn’t much reason to play these games, though. Just give the championship to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, and let’s save everyone’s time.

Agreed that the West Coast looks like a foregone conclusion. Gonzaga is vastly superior to the rest in the conference. The second-place Saint Mary’s Gaels are well behind Gonzaga.

That’s why they play the games, though. If Gonzaga has an off game, things could get closer than the Bulldogs would like.

I’m not the highest on Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament, though it’s going to take a really off game in the West Coast for the Zags to lose this one.

San Diego and Portland are holding out faint hope that they’re going to be the team left standing in the conference. The Toreros beat Pepperdine to reach the next round, while Portland had the first game off.

The Toreros were stumbling hard into the WCC Tournament with three straight losses and in six of their previous seven attempts. They picked themselves up to beat Pepperdine, 74-67, but the Waves were not in form this season.

San Diego vs. Portland Prediction:

San Diego needed a freebie to get back on track this season. It was a perfect spot for Pepperdine on the schedule. The win gave San Diego some much-needed confidence back in their step.

However, the fact still remains that San Diego has made a season out of beating bad teams and not the good opponents. Before beating Pepperdine, their most recent win was against Pacific on February 12.

Pacific and Pepperdine are two of the worst teams in the West Coast. Pepperdine is 1-15, and Pacific is 3-11 in the WCC. Against better opponents, San Diego hasn’t been at their best.

Overall, Pacific has scored 65.9 points per game for 302nd in the NCAA and a 43.1% field goal percentage. They don’t have many offensive options, and it is tough for them to keep up with better teams.

Against a team like Portland, it’s hard to edge them out in close games. When it comes down to free throws, you want your money with the Pilots.

Portland is the second-best team in the NCAA, with a free-throw percentage of 80.6%. They are scoring 74.1 points per game for 104th in the nation.

San Diego Toreros vs. Portland Pilots Betting Trends:

San Diego
  • 1-6-1 ATS in their previous eight games
  • 0-6 ATS in their previous six games as an underdog
  • 1-4 ATS in their previous five games in March
  • 2-6 overall in their previous eight games
  • OVER is 7-2 in their previous nine games versus the West Coast Conference
  • 12-4 ATS in their previous 16 games
  • 6-1 overall in their previous seven games
  • 4-0-2 ATS in their previous five games as a betting favorite
  • 7-1 ATS in their previous eight games after a loss
  • 4-0 ATS in their previous four games after failing to cover the spread

Portland won six in a row before losing at Santa Clara as a 10-point underdog last Saturday. Their winning streak includes an impressive showing against San Deigo in a 92-60 win.

The Pilots were 1.5 favorites in that one as well and won by 32 points. That will not happen this time, but I have confidence in the Pilots staying hot from the field.

Portland has scored 83.8 points per game in their previous six outings. They buried at least 75 points in all of those games with around a 50% field goal percentage.

San Diego netted 60.4 points per game during the same period on 41.1% shooting. Look at Portland as a short favorite at the Orleans in Las Vegas on Friday night.

Expect San Diego to fail to keep up as Portland heats up during a stretch in the second-half in this one. I’m going with the Portland to keep their slim WCC Championship dreams alive.
