The 10-6 Orangemen travel to Raleigh, North Carolina to take on the 8-7 Wolfpack on Tuesday night for an ACC showdown. Syracuse was last in action on Saturday, losing on the road to Clemson 78-61. North Carolina State won easily on Saturday at home against Boston College 81-56. These two teams met on Jan. 31 in a game Syracuse won 76-73. N.C. State led that game by nine at halftime, but was held 26 second-half points as the Orangemen relied on their vaunted 2-3 zone defense to pull out the come-from-behind victory.
Syracuse is led by forward Quincy Guerrier with team-high averages of 15.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Guerrier collected a double-double in the first matchup, but it was forward Alan Griffin who led Syracuse in scoring with 19 points in the previous meeting. N.C. State lost its leading scorer at the time, Devon Daniels, only three days before the last matchup against the Orangemen when Daniels suffered a season-ending torn ACL knee injury. Taking over as the leader for the Wolfpack has been forward Jericole Hellems, who averages 13.3 points per game and had a team-high 24 in the Jan. 31 matchup.
The Wolfpack were put in a difficult position in the first matchup with it being their first game without Daniels. Now they’ve had three games to get used to life without Daniels and how to best survive with the roster that is available. N.C. State shot 26 percent from beyond the 3-point arc on the road in the first game, which was well under its season average of 35.7 percent. The Wolfpack will get plenty of open 3-point looks against the Syracuse 2-3 zone again tonight. Expect N.C. State to take advantage of those opportunities and ultimately take care of business at home to earn revenge on the Orangemen.
