Texas A&M-CC Islanders vs. Sam Houston State Bearkats Pick – NCAAM March 3, 2021

The Sam Houston State Bearkats are back home following a 83-70 win to welcome the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders to Houston. Sam Houston State will have two games at home before getting ready for the Southland Conference Tournament. The Bearkats cleared Houston Baptist with ease, as they built up a 44-30 lead going into the break at Houston Baptist University.

Sam Houston State is hoping to gear up for a long run in the Southland Conference, which hopefully results in a win and ticket to the NCAA Tournament. They go into Wednesday night with a record of 18-7 and 12-2 for a tight race in the conference. The top-4 teams in the Southland own records of 11-2, 11-2, 12-2, and 13-2.

Not only do any of these four teams have the talent to win a conference championship, but you always have to look out for a big upset as well. Those tend to happen, especially in the mid-major tournaments, so Sam Houston State and the others must be on high alert. Nicholls State is currently the hottest team in the conference with six straight wins.

They lead with a record of 16-6 and 13-2 in the Southland. The Bearkats have won five of their last six outings. A loss against Abilene Christian on the road, 86-72, ended the potential for a six-game winning streak going into tonight. That would have matched Nicholls State’s six straight victories. In any event, Sam Houston State certainly has the firepower to get hot and shoot their way to the Southland Championship.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are well out of the discussion, and are sitting in the basement of the conference. They head to Sam Houston State University with an abysmal record of 1-12 in the conference and 4-18 overall. The Islanders can just hope to finish strong against Sam Houston State and Houston Baptist.

While the odds aren’t favorable for a win on Wednesday night, the Islanders have a good opportunity in a battle of the losers in a contest against HBU to close out the year on Saturday. Head below for our free Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. Sam Houston State pick on March 3, 2021.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. Sam Houston State Prediction:

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi better be prepared to fire away in this one in anticipation of the likely offensive fireworks from Sam Houston State tonight. The Bearkats can pull away in a hurry if Corpus Christi is not hitting their spots. With a record of 4-18 this season, that’s happened far too often for the Islanders. They have recorded an average of just 63.6 points per game for 324th in the NCAA.

That number tanks all the way down to 57 points per game on the road. In one of their better performances of the season, the Islanders hung around with the Bearkats in their first meeting on January 75. Sam Houston State had to fight for a win, though they managed to hold on to edge out the Islanders, 75-70. That was one of the worst efforts of the year for Sam Houston State, but I expect a lot more out of them tonight.

The Islanders have struggled mightily on the road this season. All four of their wins have been at home, as they carry a record on the road of 0-9 going into Houston. That is going to happen when you’re scoring just 57 points and conceding 74.2 points per game. Sam Houston State has a beatable defense, but Texas A&M-CC does not have the firepower to take advantage. Note that the Bearkats are 21st in the NCAA with 80.7 points per contest, and it only gets better at home.

It gets much better for Sam Houston State at home as well. They’ve been hot at Johnson Coliseum with 93.2 points scored per game. Like I said, the defense is beatable, but can’t see that being an issue against Corpus Christi. In their previous five games, Sam Houston State has allowed 69 points per game for a respectable effort. It’s hard to foresee Corpus Christi making this a game like they did at home in January. I feel good about Sam Houston State pulling away for a 20-point win, in the ballpark of 85-65.
