We have a solid, yet small card generally speaking of college basketball on Monday. There are three ranked teams in action, with the No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders and No. 14 West Virginia Mountaineers meeting in the marquee game of the day in Morgantown. No. 13 Virginia will play host to Syracuse in the other ranked matchup.
Unranked Arizona State and Arizona should be an entertaining matchup later in the evening in the desert, though neither team is ranked. Arizona is flirting with getting into the Top 25, but might need to nail down a signature win to get there. Beating average teams in the Pac-12 doesn’t exactly help their cause.
If you like small conference basketball, then there is plenty of that to digest on Monday. I happen to like these games that slip under the radar, at least for gambling purposes. Oddsmakers and their algorithms can’t keep up with every single college basketball game. There are going to be mistakes out there, and they’re more likely to happen in the smaller conferences where there isn’t as much of a betting handle.
As we get deeper into the NCAA Tournament in March, that’s when lines really tighten up and in some cases too sharp. I’m not saying that oddsmakers hand out free money in the smaller conferences, but there are opportunities out there when the market is not as efficient as it could be. We head to the Soutwestern Athletic Conference for our first college basketball play on Monday.
This is a late night matchup between the Texas Southern Tigers and the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils. Neither team has been trending in the right direction this season, but Mississippi Valley State has been on a whole different level of ineptness. Texas Southern goes into Monday evening with a record of 3-7 following a 66-57 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff on Saturday. It snapped a four-game losing streak for the Tigers.
Conversely, the Delta Devils have been miserable and may not win a game this season. They are 0-13 and continue to come out on a nightly basis with no energy. In yet another abysmal performance, the Delta Devils lost their latest outing against Prairie View, 77-31. Some effort would be nice, but that’s asking a lot. Head below for our free Texas Southern vs. Mississippi Valley State pick on January 25, 2021.
Texas Southern Tigers vs. Mississippi Valley State NCAA Betting Odds:
Texas Southern vs. Mississippi Valley State Prediction:
Mississippi Valley State has to look at themselves in the mirror and start believing in themselves. If they don’t fail to recognize their problems, then they may very well go winless in 2020-21. The Washington Generals could likely give this Mississippi Valley State team a run for their money. It goes without saying that Mississippi Valley State’s numbers are miserable. That is going to happen when you’ve played 13 games and have yet to locate a win.
In their most competitive game, Mississippi Valley State lost 71-59 against Alcorn State on January 12. Mississippi Valley State have failed to keep a game within single digits thus far. Note that the Delta Devils have conceded 93.1 points per game, dead last in the NCAA. If you think the offense is going to help them stay in this one against Texas Southern, think again, as they’re equally as bad on offense.
Mississippi Valley State is scoring at a putrid clip, with just 54.1 points per game for 345th in the country. It’s not like their schedule has been particularly difficult either. They were blown out against a mediocre Southern Jaguars team recently, 102-61, and recently took another embarrassing loss against a team that Texas Southern took to the wire in Prairie View A&M, a 71-33 loss.
Texas Southern dropped a 71-67 decision against Prairie View on January 11. They are not an amazing team by any means, but they are a juggernaut in comparison to the Delta Devils. The Tigers have scored an average of 70.5 points a game for 213rd in the NCAA, and conceded 73.2 per game for 242nd. A mediocre team like Southern Southern is fully capable of blowing this dreadful Mississippi Valley State side out. I like Texas Southern in a 80-50 game to win and cover on Monday night.
