Towson Tigers vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons Pick – NIT Tournament March 16, 2022

The Towson Tigers and Wake Forest Demon Deacons didn’t play to go to the NIT Tournament this season, but there’s still an opportunity to go into the offseason with some momentum.

Nobody remembers who the winner of the NIT was, though celebrating in NYC at Madison Square Garden sounds like a fun time.

Wake Forest was expecting a trip to the NCAA Tournament. However, a loss against the 13th seed, Boston College Eagles, in the ACC Tournament damaged their resume too much.

If Wake Forest has a strong push in the conference tourney, we may not be talking about the Deacons at home right now. Wake Forest stumbled down the stretch, though.

They are going into Wednesday with losses in four of their last seven games. A couple of wins against Louisville, 99-77, and NC State, 101-76, perhaps set the stage for a long run, but it was false hope.

Wake Forest finished the regular season with a record of 23-9 and 13-7 in the ACC. It wasn’t that terrible of a season for the Demon Deacons.

They looked great at times and even beat some quality opponents, but they were unable to find a signature win down the stretch. The Deacons came really close, though.

Wake Forest came a bucket short in a 76-74 loss at Duke as a 9.5-point underdog on February 15. That would have been a big one, and they get respect for competing in a tough environment, but it was a lost opportunity.

Towson can’t be thrilled with being in the NIT, either. They won the Colonial Coastal Association in the regular season, but didn’t do it in the conference tournament.

That’s the big one for an automatic invite to the NCAA, not winning the conference in the regular season. In the second round, the Tigers were upset against the No. 2 seed, Delaware, 69-56. One bad shooting game can ruin a whole season.

Towson vs. Wake Forest Prediction:

Towson is going to have to shoot the ball and run the floor well tonight. If the Tigers aren’t in their best form offensively, this isn’t going to work against a Deacons team that can get hot in a hurry from the field.

The Tigers are 113th in the NCAA, with 73.9 points per game. They are 90th from the field with a success rate of 45.7%.

Towson is going to need more than this, though. Through their last five games, they’ve scored 76.6 points per game.

However, with a 42.9% field goal percentage, they are going to have to be better versus a team from the ACC. Remember that Towson plays in the CAA.

Their numbers have been against some lackluster opponents. Put Towson in the ACC, and they’d be lucky to score around 63 points a game.

Towson Tigers vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons Betting Trends:

  • 7-0 ATS in their previous ten games as an underdog
  • 6-2 ATS in their previous eight games
  • 19-7 ATS in their previous 26 games versus a team with a winning record
  • 1-4 ATS in their previous five games versus the ACC
  • 1-4 ATS in their previous five games in March
Wake Forest

  • 10-5 ATS in their previous 15 games
  • 4-1 ATS in their previous five games after failing to cover the spread
  • 7-3 ATS in their previous ten games on a Wednesday
  • 16-2 overall in their previous 18 games at home

Wake Forest is tough to stop when they’re in a rhythm from the field. They are one of the better teams, with a success rate of 48.9%. Wake Forest is 11th in the nation in this regard.

Their hot shooting has led to an average of 79.5 points per game. In their previous five outings, Wake Forest is finding it easy with 85 points per game and a 49% field goal percentage.

This is against much better talent than Towson has to offer. Towson ranks 78th while Wake Forest is 37th on KenPom.

The argument against Wake Forest is that they aren’t going to be motivated. While Wake Forest may not be especially motivated, what about Towson?

They were upset against a No. 5 seed as the top seed in the CAA Tournament. Towson was expecting on going to the NCAA Tournament.

At home versus an opponent from the CAA, Wake Forest should clear the Tigers and cover the spread if they show any sign of motivation on Wednesday night.
