We took the L last night as the Arkansas Razorbacks fell a few points short of the Florida Gators in Gainesville as the Rowdy Reptiles continued their home dominance and snuffed out the ‘Backs five-game winning streak. Florida put themselves in good position to earn a top four seed – particularly if they show well (advance to at least the Final of the SEC Tournament and play Kentucky tough).
In other news, Wake Forest got closer to the glorious NCAA Tournament invite list with a BIGTIME 88-81 win over Louisville, as did Marquette did dealing the Xavier Musketeers their sixth straight loss, at home nonetheless, as the bottom continues to plummet out from underneath the Musketeers since the unfortunate injury to Edmond Sumner.
Dayton win the A-10 outright with a nice home win over VCU, Illinois got a MASSIVE win over Michigan State, as did K-State on the road over TCU in a one-point “did the bid just change hands?” thriller.
But the story of the night, the shot of the night, and arguably the moment of the college basketball season, if for no other reason than HOW MUCH that shot meant (and the subsequent Chris Collins – Jimmy V-esque “someone hug me, where is everyone, where is everyone going!?!?” frantic reaction) was Northwestern’s dramatic 21st win of the season, all but clinching the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. I’ll spare you doing injustice to the moment by trying to verbally paint the picture – if you haven’t seen it yet, google it (after finishing your time on TheSportsgeek.com, of course)
It hasn’t been the start to the week I was looking for, so let’s see if we can get things rolling tonight on a loaded Thursday of college hoops.
Today’s College Basketball Pick:
UCF Knights -10 at USF Bulls
UCF is fresh off one of the bigger wins in school history, a surprising home win over #19 Cincinnati, catapulting them to 19-10 overall, and adding a quality win to an NIT-hopeful resume. Tonight, the head West on I-4 to take on their “rival” South Florida Bulls.
I’ll fade USF all day, everyday, any darn day. They are 1-15 in their last 16 games. They are 1-6 at home and just 6-10 ATS in conference play. They have lost a staggering 13 games by double-digits. They are losing every game and barely competing in many of them.
UCF hasn’t been great on the road. They are just 3-5 on the road this season in AAC play. But they ARE 7-1 SU as an underdog and 10-7 ATS overall. They have been excellent in games they are SUPPOSED to win, and a trip to USF definitely fits that bill.
This pick isn’t a love paen to the Knights, it is more an absolute confidence in the lousiness of the South Florida Bulls.
