EPL Matchweek 10 – Tottenham Hotspurs vs Manchester City Pick

The game of the week will take place at the Wembley Stadium, where Tottenham Hotspurs will host league-leaders Manchester City in a fantastic derby match. Can Tottenham finally break through their poor record against the Big 6 clubs or will Manchester City keep rolling in the English Premier League?

Tottenham have started the season strong with 3 consecutive wins, including a 0-3 demolishing of Manchester United at Old Trafford. They did lose two matches to Watford and Liverpool but since then have pulled off another 4 straight wins. They currently stand in the 5th place in the English Premier League with 21 points from opening 9 matches in the EPL.

Manchester City has been clinical this season and is deservedly at the front of the pack in the English Premier League. They are still undefeated in 9 matches, 7 of which they have won. The only teams which have survived a match with the defending champions and taken points with them, are Wolverhampton and Liverpool.

This match could have tremendous implications in the EPL title race, as Liverpool have an easy matchup this week and could take a sole lead in the EPL if Manchester City fail to win here. I have prepared a short preview for the match, along with my pick for this matchup, so feel free to read on.

Tottenham Hotspurs vs Manchester City Pick

Both Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester City have entered this season in the English Premier League with title ambitions on their mind and both clubs have performed admirably, as just 2 points separate them and they are alive in the title race. This match has huge implications for the title race, especially for Tottenham, who have often failed in these situations, facing other Big 6 clubs with everything on the line.

Although everyone expected Tottenham to be competitive this season, few have expected them to play this well. A loss to rivals Liverpool does hurt, but a 0-3 demolishing of Manchester United at Old Trafford after more than a decade is certainly the highlight of their season so far. They have played well on the defensive side of the ball this season and have allowed only 7 goals in opening 9 matches, which is good enough for the 2nd best defense in the EPL, behind the likes of Liverpool and their rivals this weekend, Manchester City.

Manchester City has been even more dominant this season. They are undefeated and are running through opponents without a hint of mercy. Their 22-3 goal difference is by far the best in the English Premier League and they are currently ranked No. 1 in both offense and defense in the EPL, a feat that is rarely accomplished by a single club.

Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester City have met on 155 separate occasions since their founding and this is a perfectly balanced rivalry, where both clubs have 60 wins and 35 matches have ended up in a draw. Manchester City has been a more dominant club in recent history, with 6 wins in last 10 matches. Tottenham have won 3 of those and 1 match ended up in a draw. When it comes to games played at home, Tottenham has fared a bit better with 5 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw against Manchester City in games played at White Hart Lane/Wembley Stadium.

This rivalry has always been a goal fiesta. Out of the last 10 matches between the two sides, 8 have ended up with more than 2.5 goals scored in them, including 6 out of the last 7 matches. The story is identical for matches that Tottenham was the host, 8 out of the last 10 and 6 out of the last 7 had more than 2.5 goals.

This season, both sides have demonstrated that they are capable of playing balanced soccer and excelling at both sides of the field. Tottenham Hotspurs rely on their prolific star Harry Kane for goal scoring, with the support of Lucas Moura, Cristian Eriksen, and Dele Alli. Similarly, Manchester City’s attack has been spearheaded by superstars Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, while the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David & Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane provide the support.

When it comes to injuries, Tottenham will be without the services of forwarding Dele Alli due to an ankle injury. Manchester City should be completely healthy, save for midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who will face a fitness test before the match.

The key for this matchup will be controlling the midfield and limiting the number of scoring chances that opponent can create through possession. Manchester City due have an edge in the midfield, with talents like David and Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho patrolling their midfield, but Tottenham does have the physicality on their side and could use it to spoil Manchester City’s attacking moves. It remains to be seen how Manchester City will handle Harry Kane defensively, as he is too big and skilled for most of their defenders to keep up with.

I find it hard to pick against Manchester City in this, due to a clear-cut advantage they have in the middle of the field. It will be by no means easy for them to win at Wembley Stadium but they should have enough to squeeze by the Spurs in a high scoring affair. Tottenham might spring a surprise on them if they are able to get the ball forward to Harry Kane and Lucas Moura, the single area where the Spurs have a favorable matchup on the pitch. Still, my pick is Manchester City.

My Pick
