EPL Matchweek 8 – Liverpool vs Manchester City Pick

Game of the Week of Matchweek 8 will take place at Anfield, where 2nd placed Liverpool will host league leaders Manchester City in a duel of undefeated clubs. This match might be a turning point in the English Premier League title race, with teams tied on points at the moment and only the goal difference separating them.

Liverpool have won their opening 6 matches in the EPL and had a perfect record and league lead until last week, when a tie with Chelsea put them on an even level with Manchester City. Liverpool’s revival under Jurgen Klopp is finally hitting its full gear, as they already signaled their elite form last season by reaching the UEFA Champions League Final. A lot has been made of Liverpool’s title drought (27 years and counting), so the pressure is on the team and Jurgen Klopp to deliver the title this season.

Manchester City are just demolishing their opposition this year. They have scored amazing 21 goals in their opening 7 matches, good enough for a 3 goals per game pace. They have also allowed only 3 goals and are tied for the league’s best defense with Liverpool. They have won 6 matches out of their first 7, with the only draw coming at the hands of West Ham United.

I have prepared a short breakdown of the match and some betting predictions, so feel free to read on.

Liverpool vs Manchester City Pick

Both sides have been stellar this season and are currently the main favorites for the English Premier League title, along with Chelsea who have been revitalized under Maurizio Sarri. This matchup is of key importance for the EPL title race and the winner of this match could get an early advantage.

Liverpool have been perfect in the EPL until the last matchweek, when they finally drew 1-1 away at Chelsea. Liverpool have been impressive, dominating the opposition and scoring 15 goals in their opening 7 matches of EPL. The biggest surprise of the season has been their defense, who has performed above all expectations and allowed only 3 goals in the 7 matches in EPL. Liverpool’s defense has been their Achilles’ Heel in the past and one of the main reasons why they couldn’t put together a consistent season. If that is a thing of the past, Liverpool might be able to end their 27-year EPL title draught this season.

Manchester City have been even more impressive since the start of the season. Since winning the EPL title last season, with 19 points to spare to 2nd placed Manchester United, Manchester City have talked about focusing on the UEFA Champions League title as their next goal. By watching them play this season, I couldn’t notice the shift in their priorities, as they have once again struggled in the UEFA Champions League and are dominating domestically.

Manchester City have won 6 out of their 7 EPL matches, with their only draw coming at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 1-1 away match. The Citizens have the league’s best defense along with Liverpool and have allowed only 3 goals in 7 matches. Offensively, they have been the most dominant force in EPL, scoring 21 goals in 7 matches, by far the best offense in EPL.

Liverpool and Manchester City have met on 208 previous occasions and Liverpool have dominated the rivalry with 104 wins, Manchester City have won 54 and 52 matches have ended in a draw. The recent history has been even more lopsided, with Liverpool winning 19, Manchester City winning 7 and 10 ending in a draw since 2004.

Liverpool are currently on a 4-match winning streak against Manchester City in all competition, beating the Citizens in 2 UEFA Champions League matches last season, one International Champions Cup match and 1 English Premier League match. The Reds have been even more dominant at their home ground, Anfield, where they haven’t lost to Manchester City since 2003.

Despite their recent struggles against Liverpool, Manchester City have managed to beat them last season at home with a smashing 5-0 score. The Citizens are looking to improve in the matches against, what it seems, their main rival for the EPL title this season.

Traditionally this matchup has produced a large number of goals. To be precise, 17 out of the last 20 matches between the two sides has produced more than 2.5vdcgfx goals and currently the last 5 matches between the two clubs have been over 2.5 goals as well.

Both sides have tremendous offensive potential, with Salah, Mane and Firmino on the one side and Aguero, Jesus, De Bruyne, Silva, Sane and Sterling on the other side. Both sides are coming off a short week, as they had to compete in the UEFA Champions’ League. Manchester City seemed like a fresher side, as they have more depth and tend to rotate more, while Liverpool struggled in their away game versus Napoli and ended up losing.

I expect both teams to focus on dominating the midfield and controlling the possession. Both sides like to employ their own brand of pressing, used to dispossess the opponent and quickly transition into a counter-attack. Manchester City do have more pace in the backline than Liverpool, but the Reds defense has performed admirably so far in the EPL as well.

I find it extremely hard to pick between the two sides. Manchester City look like a better team at the moment but Liverpool have always been able to dominate this rivalry in the past. Therefore, I suggest going with the safe bet, which is goals, goals, goals.
