Alabama vs. Clemson Pick – Sugar Bowl (CFB Playoff)

The Alabama Crimson Tide and Clemson Tigers meet in Game 2 of the college football playoff. The Sugar Bowl features two of college football’s best, as the Crimson Tide and Tigers square off in the Sugar Bowl. I just wrote this article and my computer crashed on me and it didn’t back up the article for whatever reason, so here we go again. Let’s hope that isn’t a bad omen for New Year’s Day.

A lot of people were not too keen on Alabama reaching the playoff. They didn’t even get to the SEC Championship, let alone win it the conference, but are here with a chance at the National Championship. When the media was debating whether Alabama belonged in the championship, Vegas had Bama as favorites to win it all. Not just reach the playoff, but go all the way and win the National Championship.

It goes to show you how good odds makers are in Las Vegas. They knew when it was all said and done, the NCAA wasn’t going to be able to keep them out of the playoff. Alabama suffered a tough loss to Auburn in the Iron Bowl, and nearly suffered another slip-up against Mississippi State. They ultimately pulled it out late but it was a close call.

Kelly Bryant will get the nod for Clemson at quarterback. When Deshaun Watson left it almost felt like Clemson was going to need another year or two to get back to the playoff, but Bryant quieted the doubters pretty quickly out of the gate.

No, he is not on the same level as Deshaun Watson. However, with the talent around Bryant, he doesn’t have to be a Watson. Maybe he comes full-circle here, though. Will they need him to be that good today and perhaps in the National Championship? Perhaps, but he has shown the ability to play like Watson in spots. Clemson just have to hope that they get Deshaun Watson performances out of him tonight and in the championship if they do in fact beat Alabama today. Alabama vs. Clemson Pick:

Bryant has been productive with 13 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. The beauty of his game is his ability to run the football. In that sense, he does remind you a lot of Deshaun Watson. Bryant rushed for 697 yards and 11 touchdowns to help Clemson out on offense. He is going to face a stingy test against the Alabama defense tonight. However, Alabama is still trying to overcome injuries. Heading into their final game against Auburn there was concern about injuries on defense, and it came true in the Iron Bowl.

Since the Iron Bowl, Alabama has continued to suffer injuries. Freshman linebacker Dylan Moses will not be able to suit up for the Sugar Bowl today. He was filling in for another player, senior Shaun Hamilton, who has been out of commission since around midseason. Defensive back Hootie Jones who was injured against Auburn will be absent in this one as well. Nick Saban will be realigning his defensive group in this one. Alabama may have top-tier numbers and ranked highly, but they haven’t looked nearly as dominant as they have in the past. Part of that is certainly because of injuries.

Clemson have looked dominant, outside of not showing up to play Syracuse that one week. And note that Jalen Hurts has struggled against SEC defense. In fact, his completion percentage stands at an abysmal 56.9%. Their schedule was not the toughest. The best defense in the SEC he had to play was LSU. Other than LSU, there really wasn’t anything close to a Clemson defense on their schedule. The lack of a tough schedule was another reason why people were not too happy with Alabama getting in. The numbers suggest this is going to be a close game. They are even in just about everything. I expect the Alabama injuries to play a role here, though. The injuries caught up to them against Auburn, and should today as well. I have to go with the points and the Clemson Tigers in the Sugar Bowl.

PICK: CLEMSON +3 (-110)
