It’s a bittersweet night in Atlanta, as the final college football game of the year is upon us. However, it’s the much anticipated National Championship to determine the best in the FBS. A lot of people, myself included, didn’t care for the Crimson Tide making the postseason to begin with, but they’re going into the National Championship as favorites. Georgia won the SEC and Alabama wasn’t even in the conference championship. If Alabama wins on Monday night, all of that controversy isn’t going to mean much.
Odds makers had them as favorites to win before they were even voted in to the playoff, so it really wouldn’t be a Cinderella story. The Alabama defense suffocated first-year starter Kelly Bryant. They didn’t look like a typical Bama defense this season. Don’t get me wrong, the Crimson Tide decent were certainly a top defensive unit, but they weren’t that dominating team we’ve seen in the past who didn’t allow offenses to move an inch.
Nick Saban had his troops ready to go against Clemson. The story of the game was Kelly Bryant’s inability to get going for the Tigers. Bryant had a pretty decent year, but Alabama did their homework on him, and didn’t allow him to do what Deshaun Watson did. Bryant may have his chance at revenge next season, but for now, freshman Jake Fromm will have his opportunity to crack the Alabama defense. Fromm has exceeded expectations, as he’s looked like a senior out there. From his leadership to play on the field, Fromm has been more than anybody hoped for.
It goes without saying that Fromm has the potential to be the best quarterback since Matthew Stafford at Georgia. Aaron Murray fits into the second best slot since the Stafford era, and I think Fromm has the potential to be a much better quarterback than Murray, who did some good things at Georgia. Fromm has passed for 23 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Note that this is in the SEC. He isn’t taking advantage of bad defenses in the Big-12 or something. And again, Fromm is a freshman with plenty of room to grown. Georgia survived Oklahoma, completing a big comeback to win in overtime. They must be better in the National Championship. Alabama vs. Georgia Pick:
It wasn’t smooth sailing for Alabama to get to this point. They had their moments where they struggled. Notably, re-watch that Mississippi State game and you will find glaring holes. They were lucky to win that game. I expect Auburn to beat them in the Iron Bowl, there was no surprise there, but again, their issues were on full-display. Before their victory over Clemson, the best win they had was against LSU. Alabama nevertheless held some of the best numbers you’ll find in the country on defense. They are 2nd in the nation with 258 yards allowed per game. Despite the injuries they went through this season, Alabama held strong, albeit letting their guard down at times.
Clemson was held to just 6 points, and Bryant passed for just 124 yards and 2 interceptions. Fromm hasn’t snapped under the pressure thus far. People predicted that he was going to run into problems against the Auburn defense, but he navigated them brilliantly. He threw for 183 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. The three-headed monster of Nick Chubb, Sonny Michel, and D’Andre Swift took care of the rest on the ground. Georgia ran for an average of 267.4 yards per game this season, 8th in the nation.
The Crimson Tide counter with a potent ground game of their own. Alabama is 10th in the country with 255.8 yards per game. Georgia holds a slight edge defensively against the pass, as they’re 2nd compared to Bama who are 7th. The Bulldogs will not have to deal with Baker Mayfield in this game. Jalen Hurts is good, but does not pose the same kind of issues Georgia had against Mayfield and the Oklahoma offense. And once Georgia adjusted at halftime, they had a much better grip on the Sooners.
Statistically, these teams are just about identical on offense and defense. Injury wise, Alabama has racked up the body count on the injury report, though. We can go up and down the amount of injuries Alabama is dealing with and it keeps getting worse. Starting right guard Lester Cotton is on the shelf, joining all three starting linebackers who are out. Defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick will be playing through a kidney injury against Georgia. Bryant buckled under the pressure, but Fromm is a tough kid to crack. He will give them the edge, along with the staggering amount of injuries Alabama is now having to deal with. All things considered, I’d recommend taking the points in the National Championship. Best of luck, and thank you for following our college football picks all season long.
