Arkansas State vs. Georgia Southern Pick – NCAAF Week 6

Wednesday night college football must me one thing, we’re already out of September and it’s October. Wednesday, and even Tuesday nights on occasion, feature smaller conferences. Notably, the MAC and Sun Belt typically dominate these kind of weekday games. I personally like MAC and Sun Belt football. Heck, I like all of college football.

On Wednesday night we have a matchup featuring the Arkansas State Red Wolves and Georgia Southern Eagles. Neither team has gotten off to an ideal start, Arkansas State at 1-2 and Georgia Southern a 0-3 team. Yeah, not ideal at all. The Eagles have been struggling to find a quarterback to effectively operate their triple-option. It’s been trial by error and there has been a lot of error with no success.

Georgia Southern lost a lot of talent last season and it’s showing badly. This is a team who really knew how to roll up the points. They had a nice 1-2 punch at quarterback, with two quarterbacks who had a good grasp on the triple-option. In fact, they ranked amongst the top teams in rushing yardage. In 2017 they have a lot of work ahead of them if they want to get back competing for the Sun Belt. At this juncture, it’s just a learning experience for the youngsters for the coming years. Georgia Southern recently was thrashed by Indiana for a final score of 52-17.

The Eagles closest contest this season came against none other than New Hampshire. Losing to 10 points, 22-12, to New Hampshire at home is inexcusable. I don’t care the lack of talent on the roster, that’s just a lack of effort. Arkansas State dropped a 44-21 decision to SMU on the road, which isn’t as bad as losing to New Hampshire by 10 points.

Both schools have had an extended layoff for this Wednesday night contest. The 23rd was their last games, so they’ll be suiting up for the first time in over a week. Not the most glorious matchup, but let’s look to make some coin on the college football field on a Wednesday night. Head below for the pick.

Arkansas State vs. Georgia Southern Pick:

Arkansas State concluded the 2016 season with a nice 31-13 win over UCF. If only that was in 2017, as the Knights are one of the up and comers in college football this season. That would have been a really good win. Instead they have to settle with a 48-3 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff as their biggest win of the year. The Red Wolves have been relatively competitive, though. They hung in there against Nebraska, taking a 43-36 loss and then a 44-21 loss to SMU. No, 44-21 isn’t a competitive score, but the SMU are one of the more underrated teams in the country. Also, what does Georgia Southern have to counter that result? As embarrassing as it may sound.

Quarterback Justice Hansen has been playing great football for the Red Wolves. He’s connected for 10 touchdowns with only 2 interceptions. He played fine in his first year as the starter, passing for 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. What Hansen has really improved on is his completion percentage thus far, going from 57.9 percent to 68.8 percent. He should be able to navigate through this Georgia Southern defense who have allowed 38.3 yards per game.

Shai Werts has emerged as the starter for the Eagles, but they’re churning through different guys looking for the right fit. Werts has rushed for 179 yards, while passing for 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Again, Georgia Southern is a triple-option school. When it works, it can really work well, like for instance Georgia Tech. When it’s bad, it can be really bad, though. The Eagles are in the really bad category. Arkansas State should be able to handle them on the road in this one. I like the Red Wolves to win and cover 7.

PICK: ARKANSAS STATE -7 (-110)
