Every year there are one or two bowl games that look like they are going to be so terrible just by looking at the schools, but end up being of the more entertaining variety. I have a feeling that game could be between Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech. All you can ask for out of these games is a fun game to watch. If of course you don’t have any money on it. With money on the game the most fun game is the one that cashes a ticket. Hopefully we get both tonight in the New Orleans Bowl. Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech have both enjoyed pretty nice seasons. The offenses have looked on point for the greater part of the season, which I think opens itself up for an entertaining game this evening. Arkansas State opened the season looking lost against USC with a 55-6 loss, but finished the season going strong. In fact, Arkansas State is on an eight game winning streak heading into the New Orleans Bowl. They haven’t lost since October 3rd against Toledo. Their only losses came early in the season, not having lost since early October.
Louisiana Tech was looking hot as well before losing to Southern Mississippi 58-24 in late November. Tech was victorious in four straight before dropping to Southern Miss. Thus, I think this makes for a pretty good game against two teams who have had some success the last month of the college football schedule. They weren’t quite good enough to get themselves in a big bowl game or anything, but among the small bowls with teams that don’t look like they are going to give much, this one might end up surprising you. Just a forewarning, don’t go nuts on the first day of bowl season. Just like March Madness, people get caught up in everything and see their bankroll become depleted rather quickly. I’m going to get the rest of writeup and give my pick below for the New Orleans Bowl.

Arkansas State vs. Louisiana Tech Pick:
Arkansas State is armed with Fredi Knighten at quarterback who has continued to improve as the season as progressed. A horrific performance against USC to open the season has turned into a respectable season for Knighten. He comes into the New Orleans Bowl throwing for 19 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Knighten also rushed for 4 touchdowns. The running game for the Red Wolves really devolved into a threat. This is what makes Knighten’s numbers even that more impressive because Arkansas State doesn’t need to rely on him. If they did, well 19 touchdowns wouldn’t do it. When the running game is rushing for an average of 236 yards per game, 17th in the nation, the quarterback just needs to protect the ball and run the offense effectively. Knighten has done that. The Red Wolves have scored 41 points per game this season. In their last eight games they have scored 49 points per game.
I feel that effective running games suffer less in the long layoff between bowl games. Louisiana Tech loves to air the ball out and have averaged 311 yards per game passing the ball. They have also averaged a pretty impressive 37 points per game this season. Louisiana Tech is led by the former Gator, Jeff Driskel, at quarterback. Driskel has plenty of experience in his 5th and final season. His numbers have improved drastically playing in a much easier conference and the offense has given him the ability to throw the ball around often. Driskel has passed for 24 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Like I said, I think this is going to be a pretty entertaining game. I see points being scored that should be able to push it OVER the total of 68.
PICK: OVER 68 POINTS (-110)
