The Auburn Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs will square off in a SEC showdown on Thursday Night to start Week 2 of the college football season. Tonight’s game will be played at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi and kickoff is set for 7:30 PM EST. Both teams come into tonight’s game with a win under their belt, and Mississippi State will be looking for revenge as the Tigers thrashed them 49-24 in last year’s September meeting in Auburn.
Auburn is coming off of an impressive 52-26 home win over Arkansas State on Saturday, although they failed to cover the 31.5 point spread. Note that the game easily made it over the 52.5 game total line, as Auburn almost scored enough points themselves. Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton was impressive in his debut with the Tigers, as he went 9 for 14 throwing for 186 yards and 3 touchdowns and had 171 yards on 15 carries and 2 more touchdowns. Newton’s impressive game was good enough to be named SEC’s offensive player of the week. Auburn comes into tonight’s game ranked 21st and has won eight of their last nine games against Mississippi State.
Mississippi State also had themselves an impressive start to the season as they thumped Memphis 49-7, holding the Memphis offense to only 41 rushing yards. The Bulldogs easily covered the 21.5 point spread at home, and the game total went over the set 47 points. Mississippi State went with two quarterbacks in their opening game and it seemed to work out for them. Junior Chris Relf and freshman Tyler Russell combined for 372 and 5 touchdowns, with Russell seeing more of the action. The Bulldogs are expecting a great atmosphere at Davis Wade Stadium tonight, and hope to start the season 2-0 as they have a very tough schedule this year.

Auburn vs Mississippi Prediction for Thursday Night Game:
Game Total Prediction (Top Play) – The line opened up at 54.5 at most sportsbooks, but public betting has pushed the line up to 56. Both teams looked stellar offensively in their opening games, putting up 49 and 52 points. The Auburn Tigers struggled with their pass defense, as Arkansas State racked up 323 passing yards on their defense. I think Auburn will have troubles with the Mississippi State passing offense, and if Auburn QB Cameron Newton can play like he did in Week 1 we will see this game make it over the posted total in the fourth quarter. TOP PLAY PREDICTION – OVER 56 (-110)
Spread Prediction – Auburn opened as 3 point favorites at most spots, but are now down to 1.5 favorites at most books. One key trend from last season is that Mississippi State went 3-1 against the spread (ATS) as a home underdog in SEC play in their past four. Auburn hasn’t fared well on the road dating back to last season going 1-8 ATS in their last 9 road games. I look for the duo of Mississippi State quarterbacks to take advantage of a struggling Auburn secondary, and we may see an upset here tonight. Prediction – Mississippi State +1.5
