Ball State vs. Toledo Pick – NCAAF Week 12

The MAC midweek specials continue on Wednesday night with a couple games on the card again. Tonight the Ball State Cardinals travel to Toledo for a dance with the Rockets, and in Ypsilanti the Eastern Michigan Eagles host the Northern Illinois Huskies. It’s another exciting edition of MAC football, which has taken over as the highlight of the week for football fans. Treat it as the entrée for the main course on the weekend. We’re going to head to Toledo, Ohio for our Wednesday night college football pick. Ball State will try and play the spoiler role and disrupt the season for Toledo.

The Rockets are in a furious battle with Western Michigan to win the MAC West. With a perfect 6-0 record in conference play, and 10-0 overall it’s going to be a challenge for Toledo. Ball State with a strong finish could reach 6-6 and be eligible for a bowl game. If I had it my way, you would have to at least finish a game above .500 to play in a bowl, but money is king when it comes to sports and they continually pump out these lower-tier games.

With 7 wins for Toledo, a bowl game is wrapped up for the Rockets. However, the goal is to win the MAC Championship, which they can do if they win out and have some bounces go their way. Western has been playing great football, so the prospect of that happening is looking rather slim. Nevertheless, the Rockets have nothing to be ashamed of. But still, this is typically they road they always take. A good year, but not good enough to get to the MAC Championship. It’s probably going to end in similar fashion without a MAC Championship in their arsenal. They can’t overlook Ball State tonight, this is for sure, though. Let’s get to the pick for tonight below.

Ball State vs. Toledo Pick:

Toledo didn’t look right last game, but still managed to win and cover on the road against Northern Illinois. They were lucky to cover, with a late scoring drive sealing the deal. Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside did his thing, throwing for 3 touchdowns and 1 interception against the Huskies. The productive game has netted him 37 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions on the season. Woodside may get an outside shot to play in the NFL. Think an undrafted rookie brought in for training camp and the preseason. Maybe a team strikes gold and he blossoms into something. Ben Roethlisberger came from the MAC, so perhaps it’s Woodside’s turn? Ah wishful thinking, but in any event he’s made for a good college quarterback.

Toledo are 5th in the country with 540 yards per game. Didn’t think that, did you? The Rockets are also averaging 39.4 points a game. They scored 31 points last week, but they had to fight for every point. I expect them to take advantage of a weak Ball State defense tonight. Note that the Cardinals are getting drilled on defense, allowing 45 points on average in their last three games. Ball State are also 115th in the nation with 470 yards allowed per game. They are just about last in the country against the pass, as they allow 313 yards per game, 126th in the country.

If Ball State has any strength it’s running the ball. In fact, they are pretty good at it, averaging 226 yards per game on the ground. Toledo are 59th defending the run, so maybe they can find success in this one gashing the Rockets. The thing here is that I expect Woodside to have a monster game, though. Ball State can run on Toledo all they want, the passing attack is going to be too much for the Cardinals to contain. I think the total is just a tad too low for me here. I was expecting about a 71 or 70.5 so I think we can get this one OVER 66 points.
