Baylor vs. TCU Pick – CFB November 27th

Bring your raincoat. One of the biggest games all season in the BIG 12 could be a little wet Friday night. It’s unfortunate, because I wanted to see a clean game with clear skies to decide this one. Nevertheless, dealing with the elements is part of football and why I don’t like indoor games. Football should be played outside with the weather becoming a variable. Even though I would rather these teams play in clear conditions. It should rain all day and there is a 100% chance of rain for kickoff. For two offenses that love to go up-tempo and pass the ball around the yard, we’ll see if it has an impact on that. Sometimes it even has the opposite impact, affecting the defense as defenders find it difficult to find their footing. As somebody that used to play as a linebacker, I hated having to play in rainy games for that reason. Cornerbacks can be particularly susceptible to that situation.

Baylor is 9-1 and TCU is entering with a record of 9-2. 9-2 looks so good, but in college football that isn’t impressive at all. Even a 9-1 Baylor team is going to find it difficult to find a way into the college football playoff. They aren’t even 1st in their conference, they are actually 3rd with Oklahoma on top. Baylor can catch a piece of the BIG 12 Championship with some help from Oklahoma State this weekend. Big game for TCU here though, falling to 9-3 would be such an eyesore for them after what they thought was going to be early in the season. Losing quarterback Trevone Boykin was devastating to their cause.

Boykin isn’t the only other playmaker that is going to be out for TCU. Note that electrifying receiver Josh Doctson. That guy can flat out play. If I’m watching a TCU game it is almost a guarantee he is going to come down with at least 2 touchdowns. His loss is substantial as well. If he can stay healthy, I think he might be able to be a big playmaker in the NFL. There have been many of players that go through these high flying offensive schools and you think they’re going to be stars at the next level, but fizzle out, so I will stay cautious. Last week I was going to take Baylor if Jarrett Stidham was starting, but it was looking like he wouldn’t. We all know what happened there. Stidham went out and got TCU out to a quick start, leaving with an injury, but the damage was already done. Backup Chris Johnson was able to take it from there. The game of the backups tonight, with Chris Johnson taking on Brahm Kohlhaussen. Not exactly the most attractive looking quarterback battle, but I am sure this is going to be a good one.

Baylor vs. TCU Pick:

I don’t like the weather and I wish starting quarterbacks were playing in this game. Noted. Heck, Baylor is on their third string quarterback. Stidham is a 5 start recruit but is a freshman, so Seth Russell was the starter at the beginning of the season. Now we’re onto Chris Johnson, who is sort of reminding me a bit of Cardale Jones in the sense that he has sat around on the bench his whole career, and now is being thrust into the starting spot late in the season.

Statistically this spread is just about right. Statistically these teams are even, everything about this game is pretty well even with the backup quarterbacks. My problem with TCU is that Kohlhaussen is light on targets. With Boykin in there, he would make everyone around him better. The presence of Doctson would have helped Kohlhaussen out, but he isn’t playing either. TCU bounced between two quarterbacks last week before settling on him. Foster Sawyer played a poor game, throwing 1 touchdown with three interceptions. Kohlhaussen nearly led TCU back with 2 touchdowns and 122 yards passing. Baylor racked up 700 yards of offense last week against Oklahoma State. The Cowboys couldn’t get anything going on the ground. Baylor can stop the run, but have trouble with the pass. However, the passing game is battered and bruised right now. I like Baylor, but not putting a big play on it by any means.

PICK: BAYLOR +1 (-110)
