Boise St Georgia Spread Pick – College Football Week 1

The opening game of the 2011 college football season for two BCS title hopefuls kicks off with non-conference action this Saturday evening September 3 (8:00pm ET) as the 19th ranked Georgia Bulldogs(6-7 in 2010) of the SEC take on the 5th ranked Broncos of Boise St. out of the Mountain West Conference in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA. This may be the premier game of college football’s opening weekend, as the Broncos again open the season against a ranked opponent from a power conference on the road. The Broncos defeated Virginia Tech 33-30 to open the 2010 season on their way to a 12-1 season and a disappointing (for them) berth in the Las Vegas Bowl where they capped the season with a 26-3 victory over Utah. The Broncos have won 12 games each of the last 3 years, and head coach Chris Petersen and quarterback Kellen Moore return for another shot at the BCS. If they hope to get there this season this game is a must win for them as they will have no margin for error and must run the table.

The Broncos triggerman Kellen Moore (38-2 career record as a starter) is the pre-season Offensive Player of the Year in the Mountain West, and commands an offense that ranked second in the nation in both total yards per game with 523.1 and points scored with 45.1. The Broncos must replace Moore’s top two receiving targets from a year ago in Austin Pettis and Titus Young, but they still should be as explosive as ever with sophomore WR Geraldo Boldewijn looking to fill the void. Running back Doug Martin (6.3 YPC 12 TDs) returns as well. The defense ranked 2nd in points allowed and total yards with 12.8 and 259.2 per game respectively in 2010, but there are question marks in the secondary to open the season. Coach Mark Richt is looking to bounce back after the Bulldog’s first losing season since 1996 and an ugly 10-6 loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl to close last season.

Boise St. vs. Georgia Pick:

Bulldogs have the advantage of the home crowd in the Georgia Dome, but they have many more question marks at key spots on the offensive line and in the offensive backfield than the veteran Broncos do after an injury to Trinton Surdivant and the transfers of A.J. Harmon and Brent Benedict upfront. The lack of a proven playmaker for Murray to get the football to will hurt Georgia in this game but he should still be able to put points on the board against a defense that must replace three of their five players in the secondary. Boise St. knows that this game is their de-facto BCS play-in game with the relatively weak schedule they have within their conference so they will hold nothing back on offense.

The Bulldogs will come out confident with the partisan crowd in the dome behind them and will look to throw the ball from the get-go. Sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray returns as the All-SEC first team (one of six first-team selections for UGA) QB after throwing for over 3,000 yards and 24 TDs as a freshman. His top receiving threats in AJ Green and Kris Durham are gone to the NFL, but true freshman Malcolm Mitchell could step in to the lineup. The defense (22.1 PPG allowed in 2010) would need to step up their efforts against BSU to slow down Moore and the fast-paced Bronco attack. The bet here is that the Bulldog defense will struggle to do so.

Georgia won the last meeting between the two teams by a score of 48-13 on September 3, 2005. Boise St. is 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games overall. The under is 27-12 in the Bulldog’s last 39 games in September and the over is 9-4 in their last 13 games as an underdog.

Take the over in this game as Boise will be tough to hold down and Georgia should be able to put up their share of points with Murray under center. With teams that averaged 45.1 and 32.1 PPG respectively last year, the Broncos and Bulldogs should light up the scoreboard in the climate-controlled conditions of the Georgia Dome. It could be a game where whoever has the ball last wins to open the season down in Dixie.

PICK = Over 51
