Chargers vs. Broncos Week 8 TNF

It’s Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 8 in the National Football League and what a game we’ve got in store tonight. A battle for AFC West supremacy takes place in the Mile High City as Philip Rivers and his San Diego Chargers travel to Denver to do battle with Peyton Manning, and his impressive Denver Broncos. Both teams have looked as if they’re two of the best in the league so far, and it will be intriguing to see them go head-to-head tonight. The Chargers enter sitting with a 5-2 record, off a tough loss against the Chiefs on Sunday. Many presume they were looking ahead to tonight’s contest, hence the lacklustre outing. Denver meanwhile looks as good as any team in football. They’re 5-1 and currently firing on all cylinders. A marquee matchup to begin the football betting week, it doesn’t get any better than this. Chargers vs. Broncos Pick:

The San Diego Chargers are just seemingly one of those teams who have always had Peyton Manning’s number. He’s struggled against the Bolts historically, and while he’s still Peyton Manning, I’m not expecting anything too dominant tonight. Even though San Diego is currently slated to be without two starting members of their secondary (Brandon Flowers & Jason Verrett), there remain enough solid pieces to disrupt Manning and the Broncos offense. It should also be noted that the Chargers have been looking forward to this game for an entire year now (since last season’s playoff exit), and they did defeat Denver last year with a depleted secondary. Expect a good San Diego pass rush to disrupt Manning, led by Dwight Freeney.

After a couple of sluggish years, Phillip Rivers needs to once again be regarded as one of the game’s elite quarterbacks. Even though Denver’s defense has quite obviously improved, it would be foolish to predict Rivers doesn’t step up with a big outing tonight. We saw last week that Colin Kaepernick had some solid success against Denver and the Chargers boast a more consistent and versatile attack. The fact that new San Diego running back has a pass-catching ability out of the backfield will be a huge boon for the Chargers offense tonight.

Despite the Broncos edge on their home-field, the spread in this game is far too high. This is especially true when you consider just how much more this game seems to mean for San Diego opposed to Denver. With the Broncos coming off a perfect victory against San Francisco on national TV with the Manning record, it’d be wise to expect a bit of a letdown. San Diego is a very good football team and one that can exploit Denver’s weaknesses, however few they are. Expect a close, hard-fought affair in this divisional showdown, and roll with the Chargers to keep this a one-possession game throughout.

PICK = Chargers +9.5 (-110)
