Clemson vs. Boston College Pick – NCAAF Week 6

The Clemson Tigers stomped their foot down last week and said wait a second here, we’re one of the best teams in the country and getting no respect. Clemson beat Louisville last week to gather back some support in their corner. Clemson started the year off a bit stagnant, as they looked like a team who was coming off a hangover from a season ago. Clemson made it all the way to the college football final by beating Oklahoma in the semi-final. Keeping up with Alabama was a different story, as they were unable to neutralize an Alabama offense and lost the contest, 45-40. Score 40 points against Alabama and your chances are looking pretty good. Not that night, with the Clemson defense having no answer for the Crimson Tide offense.

Clemson were able to slow Lamar Jackson and Louisville’s offense down just enough to capitalize. The Cardinals have back to make it interesting, but Clemson ultimately held on for a 42-36 final. Deshaun Watson didn’t impress me as an NFL prospect, but all was fair against Louisville on Saturday night. Watson made a few mistakes, with 3 interceptions on the game, but he was able to throw for 5 touchdowns, too. 3 interception games typically don’t go well in the NFL. Watson has passed for 14 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in total this year.

While Clemson has endured some bumps along the way, notably struggling against Auburn and more importantly, Troy, the Tigers found their groove at home a week ago. Nevertheless, Clemson is a team that looks beatable. They brought their A+ game against Louisville at home, but they shouldn’t have needed extra motivation to pummel Troy into the ground. The Tigers are 3rd in the country and just got one of their biggest challengers out of the way last week.

The next mega-showdown they have is against Florida State in a few weeks. Other than that game, Clemson should be favored heavily in all of the other remaining games on their schedule. The Tigers are considerable favorites against Boston College, with the line currently set at -17. Boston will try and spring the upset on their home field Thursday night.

Clemson vs. Boston College Pick:

On paper, Clemson should blow Boston College away in this game. There is a large talent discrepancy here. However, games aren’t played on paper, and games don’t always work out that way. Besides, Boston College has a way of rising up for these games. Last year against Florida State they lost 14-0, 34-17 to Clemson, and 19-16 to the 4th ranked Fighting Irish. 14 points look like a healthy win, but when 30 point wins in college football are the norm, an inferior team losing by 14 to heavyweights should be chalked up as a decent effort. Boston College has yet to have a quality win this season, as they’ve pretty well beaten up on all of the worst teams in college football.

The Eagle’s 3-2 record comes from wins against Buffalo, UMass, and Wagner. No offence to the following three teams, but they aren’t winning jack this season. UMass and Buffalo would probably find issues against a lot of FCS teams. They had a near loss to Georgia Tech in Week 1, 17-14. And then a loss in a route against Virginia Tech, 49-0. That is the ugliest resume for a team with a 3-2 record in the country. Boston College can regain some respect tonight with a solid showing against Clemson.

The Eagles are led by Patrick Towles at quarterback. Towles is in his fifth-year of college, with his previous four spent at the University of Kentucky. He has passed for 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 2016. Boston College is what you would call a boring college football team. If you like old school defensive teams that like to play the field position game you will like them.

They have focused on defense for the last ten years, always coming to play a physical brand of football. The Eagles are 1st in the country with regards to yards allowed per game, allowing only 202 yards per game. They are 1st defending the pass with 124 yards passing per game. However, Clemson will above and beyond be the best offensive challenge for them yet. I think Boston College comes motivated tonight to play and gives Clemson some problems. The defense always does come to play against top teams.

I already noted the losses they had a year ago against ranked teams. They were all competitive games. In 2014 it was more of the same competitive nature. They beat #9 USC 37-31, lost to #24 Clemson 17-13, and lost 20-17 to #3 Florida State. The Tigers are looking to avoid the letdown spot tonight after last Saturday night, they are also coming in on a short week. BC has been preparing for Clemson for the last three weeks, as they had games against Buffalo and Wager the last two weeks. Clemson will win but Boston College should be able to push another heavyweight tonight.
