Colorado State vs. New Mexico Pick – NCAAF Week 8

The Colorado State Rams travel to New Mexico for a date with the Lobos on Friday night. If you haven’t watched Colorado State play yet this season, they can be a treat to watch if the offense is clicking. The Rams are 4-2 and on their way to playing in a bowl game. They could also be contenders to win the Mountain West as well. One of their losses, against Colorado, could have easily gone their way despite a 17-3 loss.

There were horrible calls galore that went against the Rams, notably questionable offensive pass interference calls. The refs were cursed as they left the field, and the MWC had to come out with a statement. Nonetheless, Colorado State are still 4-2 and have a prolific offense in their corner. The other loss came against Alabama. It wasn’t an embarrassing loss either, they did have their moments in a 41-23 loss.

Score 23 points on Alabama and you can bow out at the end of the night pretty happy. The Rams should be able to score points on a lot of college football defenses. Would they score 23 if they played the Crimson Tide again? Probably not, but they’re fully capable of pouring it on against weak competition. The offense came to play last week, scoring 44 points on Nevada, but narrowly avoided a disaster with a 44-42 win. With Nick Stevens at quarterback, more than 40 points should be the norm against defenses like Nevada.

Stevens has been playing extremely well, as was expected going into this season. He’s passed for 18 touchdowns and 6 interceptions with a completion percentage of 63.8. Stevens could bring that up a tad, but the Bama game undoubtedly skewed his numbers a bit. Since that game, he’s hit at least 70 percent of his targets three straight weeks. He still managed to throw 2 touchdown passes against Alabama. We’ll see if the New Mexico offense can pose any problems for Colorado State on Thursday evening. Head below for our free Colorado State vs. New Mexico pick.

Colorado State vs. New Mexico Pick:

The Colorado State offense runs through quarterback Nick Stevens. However, he isn’t the only weapon they have. Their running game with Dalyn Dawkins is dangerous as ever. Dawkins has rushed for over 100 yards three weeks straight, including 190 yards last week against Nevada. He also averaged 5.9 yards per carry against Alabama. That’s nothing to sneeze at. Overall the senior owns a 6.5 yards per carry average. He isn’t a big guy at all, but is slippery fast.

Colorado State are 9th in the country overall, with 521 yards per game. They are a well balanced team, but primarily rely on Nick Stevens and the passing attack. New Mexico are pretty vanilla on defense, but poorer against the pass than against the run. They’re 68th in the nation against the pass. New Mexico handled New Mexico State and Tulsa, two above average offenses, quite well. New Mexico State won 30-28 and Tulsa 16-13. To their credit, they also have a big win over Air Force, 56-38, on their resume.

New Mexico looked like they didn’t get off the bus against Fresno State last week. They were blown out by a score of 38-0. Lamar Jordan, who is their first stringer, has been nursing an injury since the Boise State contest. He was responsible for helping New Mexico win the Air Force game. Jordan will get the start against Colorado State, which is very important for the Lobos.

He’s their most dynamic player, and the only quarterback who can run the triple-option effectively. I expect after getting into a wild one with Nevada last week, Colorado State may let their guard down on the road against the triple-option of New Mexico. Nevertheless, I think Colorado State is going to find their points on Thursday night. They did well against Tulsa and New Mexico State, but Stevens has been in his own class. A pick on the OVER looks good in New Mexico.

PICK: OVER 59 (-110)
