Georgia Southern vs. Bowling Green GoDaddy Bowl Pick – Dec 23rd

The Bowling Green Falcons are one of the better kept secrets in college football. The champions of the MAC look to cap off their win over Northern Illinois with another against Georgia Southern. On the other side, Georgia Southern is trying to put their 34-7 loss to Georgia State in the past. This is only the Eagles second year in FBS, after transitioning last season to the Sun Belt. Georgia Southern were able to nab the Sun Belt title in their first year playing at this level. By all accounts, their first couple years in FBS have been a successful endeavor. They are certainly showing the NCAA that they made the right decision in granting them the ability to jump up to the next level. If they can knock Bowling Green off, it would be quite the way to conclude their second year at the FBS level. They couldn’t win their conference, but Bowling Green is a very good team that it would be a nice win to add to the resume.

But Bowling Green isn’t good to be an easy out here. The Falcons’ offense can compete with the best of teams in college football. Early in the season their offense got into a shootout with Tennessee on the road, but it wasn’t enough as the Vols pulled away late in the 4th. Their offense can compete with the best of them. Matt Johnson can throw it around the yard and has been one of the most proficient quarterbacks in all of college football this season. Johnson has thrown for a whopping 4700 yards with 43 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He’s also rushed for 4 touchdowns.

The Falcons can run the football too. They don’t just have to rely on throwing the football with Johnson. Although, if they have to, they can do that too. They are a very dynamic offense that has many options on their team they can go to. Georgia Southern has had many moments this season where they have looked like a great offense. These are two totally different offenses, though. The Eagles run the triple-option and are the best rushing team in the nation, averaging more than 355 yards per game. You think of Navy and Air Force who run the same offense, and Georgia Southern is the best of all. Northern Illinois was a strong ground team that Bowling Green, we’ll see if they can do it again against the Eagles in the GoDaddy Bowl.

Georgia Southern vs. Bowling Green Pick:

Bowling Green can make it work two different ways. Georgia Southern is going to try and confuse the Falcons on the ground with the triple-option attack. It sounds easy in principle to just stop the run, but stopping that offense can be work. Especially for a Bowling Green team that hasn’t seen it this year. Bowling Green will be tested in that respect. That have struggled at times against the run, allowing 162.3 yards per game. They are fairly strong against the passing game, but that is a non-factor in this matchup, as the Eagles will only throw it a few times in this game.

Keeping up with the Bowling Green offense may be a chore, though. Note that the Falcons are averaging 43.4 points thanks to Johnson and a strong running game. Georgia Southern has done a good job stopping the pass this year, giving up 202 yards per game. Nevertheless, Bowling Green is an offense that they haven’t seen this season. Not this one high octane and dangerous. There isn’t one team on their schedule that really posed any kind of threat through the air. You would think UGA, but I wanted to vomit the one time I had money on Georgia because they couldn’t complete a pass. The Eagles have averaged 35 points per game this season. I could see this one getting up there on the scoreboard. You have to like the OVER.
