Georgia vs. Ole Miss Pick – NCAAF Week 4

Ole Miss hasn’t had the easiest of schedules to open the season. That much is certainly true with this team. Yeah, Wofford was a creampuff, but Florida State and Alabama in the first two weeks of the season is a tough draw. Ole Miss got off to a monster start over FSU in Week 1, but folded up in the second-half and dropped a 45-34 decision. Last week they couldn’t keep up with Alabama and fell by a score of 48-43. The offense has clearly been there for the Rebels, but defensively they have ran into problems. Georgia does not pose the same kind of threat offensively that Bama or Florida State does, but they need to be playing better football. If they want to be elite in the SEC, there is a desperate need for an improvement at defense.

Georgia is certainly lucky to be undefeated right now. They’re undefeated with a 3-0 record, but it almost feels like they are 1-2. The Bulldogs opened the season with a nice 33-24 win over UNC. Then they almost lost as favorites against Nicholls State and Mizzou. Yes, I said Nicholls State, a game in which Georgia were -52.5 favorites, yet only won 26-24. Georgia followed it up with barely surviving Missouri. They should be counting their blessings that they are 3-0 right now, because they might be undefeated, but in the minds of everyone that isn’t the case. The good news is that Georgia is alive and well in the SEC, and the bad news is that they haven’t been playing great football.

The Bulldogs have been searching for a quarterback to replace Aaron Murray for the past couple of years. This is a program that had the luxury of leaning on Matthew Stafford and Murray before. Moving the ball for Georgia has been like pulling teeth, notably in the passing game. They continue to pound the ball and churn out yards on the ground with Nick Chubb. It can work, but an effective aerial attack would do this program wonders. They will have to play much better on offense today to pull the upset over Ole Miss. Quarterback Chad Kelly will be gunning for Georgia in this one for a team that desperately needs a win in the SEC today.

Georgia vs. Ole Miss Pick:

There has been pain and suffering for Georgia at the quarterback position in recent memory. It isn’t looking like the quarterbacks on this roster are going to be joining Stafford as a great Bulldog at the NFL level. Georgia has been trying to find their guy, and probably have it in Jake Eason. However, Eason is only a true freshman and is still finding his way. Perhaps Eason evolves into a special quarterback, but at the moment he is going to have his good days and bad days. Nevertheless, he is off to a decent start, throwing for 643 yards with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. It’s going to be interesting to see how he does against the Ole Miss defense. The Rebels have gotten gashed thanks to Alabama and Florida State. But against an average Georgia offense, how are they going to respond?

Conversely, how is Georgia’s defense going to handle Ole Miss? The Bulldogs haven’t played an offense anything comparable to Ole Miss. Chad Kelly can zing it out with the best of them and is one of the top quarterbacks in college football today. Ole Miss lost a couple of offensive weapons in the offseason, but they have simply reloaded. Kelly has passed for 10 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on the year. And note, it didn’t come against horrible defenses, he played extremely well against FSU and Alabama. Against the Crimson Tide, Kelly threw for 3 touchdowns to 1 interception, including 421 yards. He also added 48 yards on the ground. Quarterbacks just don’t gouge Alabama defenses like that, but Kelly made it happen.

I see Kelly gouging Georgia at home on this Saturday afternoon. If Alabama couldn’t slow him down, Georgia should be in for a workout. And again, the Bulldogs haven’t faced anything like this Ole Miss offense, not even remotely close. So then the question being: is Georgia going to be able to take advantage of the porous Rebels’ defense? I think they’ll find their yards, but I don’t see how they will keep up with Kelly, who should be able to shred another defensive unit this afternoon. Rebels should be able to take this one by about 10-13 points.

PICK: OLE MISS -7 (-110)
