Jets Steelers Line and Spread for AFC Championship

Both conferences have finally been narrowed down to two teams, and the Jets and Steelers will face off this Sunday with a chance to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. Both teams disposed of old rivals last week, and they couldn’t be more confident after their victories. Pittsburgh beat the Ravens in a high scoring affair at Heinz Field, while the Jets tasted sweet revenge by beating the heavily favored Patriots 28-21 in New England. This week’s matchup is a rematch of their week 15 contest that the Jets won; the Steelers were unable to tie the game after 4 attempts in the red zone. This Sunday’s game kicks off at 6:30 EST from Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

The Jets surprised everyone with their win over the Patriots last week. As an 8.5 point underdog and coming off a 45-3 loss to the Pats in their last meeting in early December, they were better in every aspect of the game. Sanchez outplayed Brady, showing great poise after looking nervous in the opening quarter. Jets’ receivers made huge plays all game. In particular, Jerricho Cotchery’s 50+ yard catch and run to start the 4th quarter that led to a spectacular TD catch by Santonio Holmes in the corner of the end zone put the game away for the Jets. Their defensive line helped sack Brady 3 times, while their secondary played their best when they needed it the most. The Patriots offense was visibly frustrated with the blanket coverage that the Jets were displaying, and New York now find themselves playing in the AFC Championship game for the second year running, and once again when not many people gave them a chance to be there.

Pittsburgh woke up in the second half of their divisional game last week against the Ravens. Down 21-7 at half, the Steelers came out throwing as Roethlisberger led them to a 24 point second half. Their defense stepped up in the second half also, holding the Ravens to a field goal. As good as Baltimore looked in the first half, in the end they proved to be no match for the Steelers balanced offense, as Roethlisberger threw for 2 TDs and Rashard Mendenhall rushed for 2 more. The Jets will return to town this week, and Pittsburgh will look to establish the run early and make the Jets stack the box, opening up some running room for the Steelers receivers. The Jets will most likely lean heavily on the run game and allow Sanchez to open up a bit more in the second half. But either way, we’re in store for a great Championship game between the two best teams in the AFC.

Steelers vs. Jets Early Lines for AFC Divisional Betting:

Spread: The way New York convincingly disposed of the Patriots last week has brought the odds of this game down to a respectable 3.5, but it’s a little too big for me. I suggest acting on this fast, because it will come down to 3 or even 2.5 before game time. The Jets defense played like last year’s unit on Sunday, and with all their pieces finally healthy for the first time this year, they have the ability to stop anyone in the league. Rex Ryan’s complex blitzes will be on full display this week, and there’s nothing scarier than a confident New York Jets team. The relationship that’s formed between Ryan and his players over the last year has made them into a force in the NFL, and I don’t see the justification of this game being decided by more than 3 points. But the Steelers have been more than impressive this season, and I think the reason for the 3.5 spread is due to the fact that Pitt have a much more balanced offense than NYJ. Emmanuel Saunders has turned into a great deep threat for Roethlisberger, and he compliments Mike Wallace better than Ward does. Pitt aren’t just about the running game anymore, and Roethlisberger has the playoff experience and talent to blow this one open, much like he did last week against the Ravens.

Game Total: After what’s been a high scoring playoffs so far between a lot of defense minded teams, the oddsmakers seem content with making low numbers for the O/U. All 4 games went over last week, and this week once again pits two top 5 defenses against each other. I don’t see this number moving, but suggest jumping on it early just in case. Special teams always play a factor in playoff games and this week should be no different. Jets K Nick Folk missed one last week but has looked better this post season than he has at any other point in his career, and Pitt K Jeff Reid is a veteran of the league. Mike Tomlin won’t have any trouble turning to him if a they have a 4th and short on the 38 yard line. This number is a little low for me, but the way the Jets defense played last week (before they gave up when they saw it was out of reach) it’s entirely possible that this one’s a defensive battle. But like I said before, we’ve seen lots of defensive teams put points up this post season so far (Chi, Balt, Pitt, Jets).
