Kansas, who has drawn loads of attention in the betting world with two completely different performances to start the season, travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to take on the host Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi. Some Friday night college football is at stake and we believe a prime betting opportunity is presenting itself.
Kansas, under new coach Turner Gill, turned in one of their worst performances in recent memory in their season opener. It was then and there they lost, 6-3, to North Dakota State. It wasn’t as much a “defensive battle” as it was “offensive attrition.” Kansas’ offense was dreadful. They ran for 96 yards but it took them 32 carries. They threw for 197 for a total of 293 total yards—against a team from the FCS.
Last week things changed. Kansas, who started out as seven point underdogs in the opening lines, rocketed to 14-point underdogs in their home game against Georgia Tech. The Jayhawks got better production in the running game (41 carries for 141 yards) and did as well as they could expect against a good, option-offense in Georgia Tech at terms of time of possession (28:23). It all led to an impressive upset of the Yellow Jackets by the score of 28-25.
But, how will they fare against Southern Miss? The Golden Eagles have won eight straight home games inside the friendly confines of M.M. Roberts Stadium. Last week, they put away Prairie View A&M with a 34-7 score line with the majority of starters rested in the second half. This was able to happen as the Golden Eagles sprinted out to a 31-0 halftime lead over their SWAC foes.
What about Southern Miss when they play a good team? South Carolina hammered them in their opening game, a Thursday night welcoming mat on ESPN, a few weeks ago. Even in the 41-13 defeat, the Golden Eagles went for 404 yards of total offense. Southern Miss QB Austin Davis has thrown an interception in both of the games this year and it’s right to expect him to throw another one as he adjusts to life as the full-time starter following an injury which led to him missing 8 games last season.
Kansas has a decent defense and a fiery young coach but the offense is still lagging behind. Even in their win they only managed 320 yards of offense. Southern Mississippi still has some bad blood from last year’s 35-28 defeat in Lawrence to the Jayhawks.

Kansas vs. Southern Mississippi Prediction for Week 2 Game:
Spread Prediction (Top Play) – Kansas has had an up-and-down start to the campaign but their defense has done reasonably well. Southern Mississippi’s offense has looked ineffective at times—especially against South Carolina. Both teams should look to get the ground game going and expect Kansas to continue to do a nice job on run defense. The Yellow Jackets ran the ball 52 times vs. the Jayhawks but Kansas never wilted. Look for the Kansas defense to do enough to cover the 5.5-point spread. PREDICTION (TOP PLAY) – Kansas +5.5
Over/Under Prediction – Simply put, the defenses are going to be ahead of the offenses—at least on paper— but look for things to open up some in the second or third quarter. The weather should be warm and the astro-play Turf to be very fast but the defenses should keep the total under the number. Prediction – Under 49 Points
