Louisiana Tech vs. Western Kentucky Pick – CFB September 10th

Week two of the 2015 college football season will open up a Thursday night matchup featuring the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (1-0) of Conference USA led by head coach Skip Holtz taking on the host Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (1-0) also of Conference USA at L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, KT at 8 pm EST. The Bulldogs opened their season with a 62-15 win over Southern University. Western Kentucky opened their campaign with a hard-fought 14-12 win over Vanderbilt.

The Bulldogs will be led by a new quarterback this season, Florida transfer Jeff Driskel who replaces Cody Sokol who threw for 5 TDs in a 59-10 win over WKU last season. Also gone is defensive coordinator Manny Diaz who put together a masterful game plan that resulted in 4 INTs and 3 sacks against WKU last season. Holtz and company do have plenty of firepower this season as well, as they showed in their easy win over Southern last week.

Western Kentucky earned a measure of respect in the college football world with their win over an SEC school, Vanderbilt, last week. They will attempt to avenge their blowout 59-10 loss to Louisiana Tech in Ruston last season when the Bulldogs shut down their powerful offense intercepting WKU quarterback Brandon Doughty four times and lit up the scoreboard at will. Coach Jeff Brohm expects to have his squad better prepared this time around, and the Hilltoppers will also have the advantage of playing at home this time around. They have also won 6 consecutive games since that thrashing last season, including the Bahamas Bowl to conclude the 2014 season.

Louisiana Tech vs. Western Kentucky Pick:

Louisiana Tech is 21-7 ATS in their last 28 road games, 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games against winning teams and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games. The Hilltoppers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games a team with a winning record and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Thursday games. The over is 4-1 in the Bulldogs’ last 5 games against winning teams, 5-2 in their last 7 games on fieldturf and 4-1 in their last 5 September games. The over is 6-2 in WKU’S last 8 home games and 4-1-1 in their last 6 games against winning teams.

Louisiana Tech’s offense and defense were both dominant in their win over Western Kentucky last season, and this time around the Hilltoppers are looking for revenge and will have the home crowd behind them. This game is going to be much closer than last season’s meeting, and the oddsmakers have this matchup as a virtual toss-up. It is very tough to pick either team against the line, so the play we are going to recommend here is the total. WKU’s offense had a tough week last week against Vandy, but this week they will be playing at home and not facing SEC caliber athletes on the other side of the ball. Both teams have had this game circled on their calendars all off-season, and despite a short week of preparation both will have offensive gameplans that will have a high probability of success.

Western Kentucky will play much better on offense this week, and Louisiana Tech’s offense looked in midseason form last week in Driskel’s first game under center. Expect a shootout to start week 2 off this Thursday night. Take the over here.
