Mississippi St. vs. Ole Miss – CFB Week 14

Week 14 of the 2014 college football season, aka Rivalry Week, heats up with an SEC Saturday afternoon game (3:30 pm ET) that will pit two top-25 teams.  The 4th ranked Mississippi St. Bulldogs (10-1) travel to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium at Hollingsworth Field in Oxford, MS to take on the host and 19th ranked Ole Miss Rebels (8-3) in an afternoon game traditionally know as the Egg Bowl. Mississippi St.  defeated Vanderbilt 51-0 last week to bounce back from a 25-20 loss to Alabama the previous week that knocked them from the #1 national ranking and the ranks of the unbeatens. Ole Miss was whitewashed 30-0 by Arkansas last week, their 3rd loss in their last 4 games. The Rebels have also fallen to SEC rivals LSU 10-7 and Auburn 35-31, dropping them from contention for a spot in the inaugural college football playoff.

Mississippi St. is ranked 11th nationally in scoring offense with an average of 39 points per game and 9th among FBS teams in total offense with 511.7 yards per contest. The Bulldogs rank 11th nationally in points allowed with 18.4 per game and 69th in total defense 400.7 YPG allowed.

Mississippi St. vs Ole Miss Pick

The Bulldogs are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record, 9-2 ATS in their last 11 conference games and 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games overall. The Rebels are 16-7-1 ATS in their last 24 games on fieldturf, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The under is 4-1 in the Bulldogs’ last 5 conference games, 7-3 in their last 10 road games and 7-3 in their last 10 games on fieldturf. The under is 8-1 in the Rebels’ last 9 conference games, 7-1 in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record and 6-1 in their last 7 games overall. In head-to-head play, the under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Mississippi and 9-3 in the last 12 meetings overall. The Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings between the two teams.

This is the most important game of the year for both teams year in and year out, but that is especially true this year with both teams enjoying their best seasons in years and meeting for the first time as ranked opponents since 1999. Mississippi St. still has a chance to earn a spot in the college football playoffs, and a chance to win the SEC West. Mississippi St. is also looking to notch the first 11 win season in school history, so they have no shortage of incentives to win this game. The Rebels have one of the toughest defenses in the nation, but their offense has struggled down the stretch since losing their All-American candidate at wide receiver, Laquon Treadwell to a knee injury against Auburn. Ole Miss committed 6 turnovers in last week’s loss at Arkansas and managed only 316 yards of total offense, that type of effort will not get it done here. The pick has to be Mississippi St. as the Bulldogs have only slipped up once this season, and a close loss to Alabama is nothing to be ashamed of. Take the Bulldogs and give the points here.

PICK= Mississippi St. -2.5
