If the Tar Heels were in this game again, they should have just renamed the Belk Bowl the North Carolina Tar Heels bowl, because it feels like they are in this one every year. As it was, North Carolina was trounced by a depleted Baylor team last night. The offensive line bulled over the Tar Heels en route to the blowout win. I didn’t see who won the MVP award for that game, but the trophy should have gone to the Baylor offensive line. But back to the 2015 Belk Bowl, a game that features another member of the ACC. North Carolina State will get their shot at a bowl game this year, as they take on Mississippi State, representatives of the SEC. The SEC flexed its muscles last night against Texas Tech, as LSU and Fournette pulled away from The Red Raiders. Next up in the SEC is the Bulldogs who get a crack at North Carolina State.
It isn’t North Carolina, but it will be another team from the same state in the Belk Bowl. North Carolina State is one of those teams who will be win the games they should win, and then lose the ones they should lose. But sooner or later you need to start winning the games people are expecting you to lose. North Carolina State doesn’t have any of those marquee wins. By this point, not many people are calling for upsets if you’re not going to have any wins like that on your resume.
What is the Wolfpacks biggest win this season? Let’s see. Syracuse? Yeah Syracuse it is. In all of their chances to pull upsets, they weren’t able to do it. Note that they lose to Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. So the question is how did North Carolina State even get to 7-5 and a bowl game? Because from that things look pretty dire. I agree. Well, their first four wins of the season were against Troy, Eastern Kentucky, Old Dominion, and South Alabama. They also beat Wake Forest, BC, and Syracuse. Nothing to get too excited about there. North Carolina State has a massive opportunity to finally earn their marquee win against Mississippi State this afternoon.

N.C. State vs. Mississippi State Pick:
This wouldn’t be as big of an upset as some people would make it out to be. I’m just speaking from the line set in this one. The Bulldogs are 6.5 favorites, and I expected that money would come in on Mississippi State when it opened. The SEC will always generate far more action. The ACC is 1-4 ATS thus far this bowl season. I think for the Wolfpack to get this one they’re going to have to get some balls to bounce their way. The Bulldogs were playing fine football until they ran into Alabama. It feels like that’s how the story went for everybody in the SEC, except Ole Miss, but Bama is the team in the playoff.
Statistically N.C. State and Mississippi State look dead even. Points per game, points against, yardage per game are all very similar. But in these situations you need to take a look at the level of competition. The Wolfpack haven’t played anybody worth a lick well this season. The Bulldogs have been tested every week, which will be a nice prelude for them into this bowl game. I see Dak Prescott having himself a game today. This is it for Prescott after one memorable career at Mississippi State. He put the Bulldogs back on the map. I think like Keenan Reynolds did at Navy in his final game, Prescott is going to put on a show. I have to go with the SEC in this one and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
