Week 2 of the college football schedule begins Friday night, or if you want to count Idaho State and Utah State from Thursday night, then yesterday. The NFL took centerstage on Thursday with the opener between the Chiefs and Patriots. It was a profitable endeavor in Week 1 of college football for us, but the closing games on Sunday and Monday didn’t treat us so well. Days with small sample sizes like that are always going to be more difficult than a full card.
There are a few games on the schedule tonight. The Memphis-UCF game was moved to Friday due to the impeding hurricane threat in Florida. Elsewhere, Ohio and Purdue are doing battle in Indianapolis, where a trappy line is taking shape. Purdue opened at -4.5 or -4 and it’s going down with the public, obviously, hammering the Boilermakers? I’m staying away from that. Purdue could very well have a letdown week after such a tough matchup against Louisville last week.
We’re going to Alabama instead, where the high-powered Oklahoma State Cowboys take on South Alabama. Oklahoma State had an easy time in Week 1 against Tulsa, defeating them for a score of 49-24. After two weeks, we won’t really get a clear call on this Oklahoma State team. The offense is great, that much was known before the season started. However, Tulsa and South Alabama does not test the defense much. Tulsa was looking for a new quarterback, so we can’t put them in the same category as an elite offense.
In other words, I’m reserving my opinion on Oklahoma State. At this point, I would take an elite defense against the Cowboys. Michigan or LSU against Oklahoma State, give me Michigan and LSU. Oklahoma State will take on the Jaguars of South Alabama who are coming off a 47-27 loss to Mississippi.
If anything is true, South Alabama didn’t shy away from scheduling big programs for the 2017 season. Cole Garvin did a decent enough job at quarterback to prevent it from turning into an embarrassment. He will have to play better, though, if South Alabama wants to have any shot at pulling the upset. Oklahoma State vs. South Alabama Pick:
Mason Rudolph got his Heisman audition going off to a quick start against Tulsa in Week 1. It wasn’t the stingiest test in Week 1, nor will it be in Week 2 against the South Alabama Jaguars. Rudolph threw for 303 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Cowboys to 59 points. The running game, which is just as potent as the passing game, torched Tulsa on the ground as well.
Justice Hill ran for 132 yards and a touchdown. Hill will continue to put up big numbers this season, including quality numbers against South Alabama on Friday night. James Washington, one of the best receivers in the country, went for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns.
It’s pick your poison trying to defend an offense like Oklahoma State. They have tools all over the place that defenses will not be able to cover up everywhere. For an inferior defense like South Alabama, I expect them to look lost trying to keep up with Rudolph and the Oklahoma State offense. The Cowboys should be able to move the ball whichever way they want.
South Alabama will have a heck of a time slowing down Oklahoma State in this game. They couldn’t contain an Ole Miss team who doesn’t have an offense like they’re going to face tonight. I expect Oklahoma State to put an easy 50 up on the board. However, like I said, their defense can be spotty and this could leave a backdoor opportunity for the Jags. Too many points on the road, but I do like a lot of points either way. So, a pick on the OVER looks like it will be in play for me on Friday night on the college gridiron.
PICK: OVER 66.5 (-110)
