Oklahoma vs. Baylor Pick – CFB November 14th

Right here is one of the game of the day candidates, as Oklahoma and Baylor clash in two of the BIG 12 elites. Oklahoma has been plowing through the competition lately with Baker Mayfield throwing his name into Heisman discussions. He has an outside shot at the award, but the main thing is he playing like one of the best quarterbacks in the country for Oklahoma right now. It is pretty clear that he made a wise decision by transferring to Oklahoma after leaving Texas Tech. The Red Raiders never really handed the keys over to Mayfield to run the offense. He was bouncing between a backup and starting role, but I am sure Texas Tech wishes they had him on his roster now. A good player that fits perfectly into the Oklahoma offense. At the NFL level I am unsure what he can do there, but here in Oklahoma he has found a home. I am rather skeptical of BIG 12 quarterbacks, so I cannot say with confidence I feel good about him in the NFL.

However, all I really care about is tonight and when I have money on him. He faces a tough Baylor team that is going to test him. He will need to keep up against the high octane offense of Baylor. In Oklahoma’s favor is the fact that Baylor will be going with their backup option at quarterback in this game. Starting quarterback Seth Russell is out with an injury, which opens the door for freshman Jarret Stidham. This offense is so plug-and-play that I don’t think it matters who is in at quarterback. Bryce Petty, who I don’t find is a great quarterback, looked great in the past at Baylor. Before that, Robert Griffin was making it look easy at Baylor. I have great confidence in Stidham. Russell won’t like it if the freshman walks in here and plays extremely well. If so, there may not be any reason for them to make a quarterback change next season and they’ll just go with Stidham. Russell recently had surgery to repair his neck. Stidham is being thrown into the fire right away, as he gets the mighty Oklahoma Sooners in primetime at home.

Oklahoma vs. Baylor Pick:

I believe jumping on Oklahoma here simply because the starting quarterback is out isn’t a wise choice. Like I already said, you can plug any decent player into this offense and they won’t miss a beat. I see the same with Stidham tonight. He may actually open some eyes up and forget all about Seth Russell. Stidham was a highly recruited 5 start prospect, so this guy is no slouch by any means. In the games he has played this season since taking over for Russell, yeah, Russell may be looking for a new school soon if he wants, because I see Stidham being the starter at Baylor for the next few seasons. He has passed for 9 touchdowns and 0 interceptions with 750 yards since taking over for Russell. Stidham has also chipped in with 2 touchdowns with his legs.

The Baylor offense is averaging 53.9 points per game, they are playing like this is a video game essentially. Up and down the field can be accomplished pretty easily with this quick strike offense. Baylor can flat out run the football, too. For a team that has the perception of being just pass happy, look at their numbers on the ground and ask that question again. They’re averaging 308.9 yards per game rushing. Staggering considering you would think they are a team that just airs it out, considering the points they can accumulate in a hurry. Oklahoma responds with an offense that scores 46.3 points per game. Quarterback Baker Mayfield has passed for 28 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, also running in for 5 scores on the ground. It is quite clear that watching Oklahoma and Baylor is like watching a video game. Rain is expected in the forecast, but I think the offense come to play and put up some big numbers once again this week. I contend that the OVER 76 has to be looked at here.

PICK: OVER 76 POINTS (-110)
