Ole Miss vs. Auburn Pick – NCAAF Week 6

The Ole Miss Rebels got flat out embarrassed last week. Alabama kept it coming without letting up, piling on 66 points for a 66-3 win against the Rebels. It wasn’t the first time Ole Miss looked horrible this season. In fact, you just have to look back to their game the week before. Two weeks before actually, but they had a bye in between, and apparently didn’t fix anything with the extra time.

The offense looked like a mess against Cal, and they ended up paying for it with a loss of 27-16 on the west coast. Ole Miss lost talented receiver A.J. Brown early and they didn’t know what to do after the fact. There are other receivers that have talent on Ole Miss, but they didn’t know how to utilize them very well.

The offensive scheme for Ole Miss isn’t really a scheme at all. Cal figured it out quickly. Ole Miss was running only a handful of set plays, and the rest of it was just freelancing from quarterback Shea Patterson. Patterson is a dynamic quarterback that has Johnny Manziel elements in his game. He likes to scramble and use his legs but has a decent enough arm as well. It isn’t a Shea Patterson problem, I think it’s an offensive scheme problem. For a defense, it doesn’t take too much to look at tape and foresee what’s going to be coming.

The Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss changed a lot, and I think is going to set them back for a few years or more. What we’re starting to see is that scandal wearing on them on the field. Most teams expect to get pummeled by Alabama going into Tuscaloosa, but 66-3? This coming after Cal shut them down without breaking much of a sweat. Auburn are streaking after a couple of impressive performances against Mizzou and Mississippi State. They are 4-1 with their only loss, 14-6, coming against the juggernaut Clemson Tigers. Ole Miss vs. Auburn Pick:

After a shoddy performance, the good teams know how to acknowledge what went wrong and fix it. Additionally, Ole Miss had the luxury of a bye to take a look at what they’ve been doing. It didn’t help an ounce. Nobody expected the Rebels to beat Alabama or be within two touchdowns eve, but to get trounced by 63 points, that usually comes down to effort. Ole Miss were outgained by 366 yards. Patterson threw for 2 interceptions with no touchdowns. He also had -16 yards rushing. When your offense consists of snapping the ball and figuring it out on the fly, it’s very easy for good defenses to figure it out.

Patterson has thrown for 11 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. His good numbers have come against lower-tier competition, though. Patterson threw 3 interceptions against Cal, and then another 2 against Alabama. Patterson and the Ole Miss offense is going to get another test today at Auburn. The Tigers allowed 14 points to Clemson and 14 to Mizzou, that’s been the most this year. Note that Clemson and Mizzou do not have lightweight offenses. Auburn are 6th in the country, allowing just 11 points per game.

Baylor transplant, Jarett Stidham, is starting to look comfortable at his new school. He’s in a groove, passing for 3 touchdowns and no mistakes the last two weeks. Stidham hasn’t needed to do much though, as Auburn let the running game roll on the ground. Auburn are rushing for 208.4 yards a game on average. Conversely, Ole Miss is dead last, with only 74.2 yards per game. Nothing is working for Ole Miss right now, and I don’t expect anything to click on the road in another hostile environment. After getting steamrolled by the Crimson Tide, it’s Auburn’s turn to have some fun at Ole Miss’s expense.

PICK: AUBURN -22 (-115)
