Packers Steelers Over Under Line – Super Bowl Over Under

The teams for Super Bowl XLV are set: the Pittsburgh Steelers (14-4) will be the representatives from the AFC, and the Green Bay Packers (13-6) will be the representatives from the NFC. This will be a matchup of two of the most storied franchises in NFL history, with Pittsburgh going for its record seventh Vince Lombardi trophy in their eighth trip to the big game, and Green Bay seeking their fourth title in their fifth trip to the Super Bowl. Both teams feature rugged defensive units, with the Steelers ranking first in the NFL in points allowed with 14.5 per game, and the Packers ranking second with 15 PPG allowed. On offense, both units are led by veteran, big-game quarterbacks: Ben Rothlisberger for the Steelers and Aaron Rodgers for the Packers.

Over Under Explained For Beginners

The over/under line is simply the total points that will be scored in the game by both teams combined. The early line for the over/under for Super Bowl XLV is 44.0 points; so for example if the score ends with Green Bay winning 27-20 over Pittsburgh (for 47.0 total points), a bettor who takes the over on 44.0 would win their bet. If the game ends with a score of 23-20 Green Bay over Pittsburgh (for 43.0 total), a bettor who bets under 44.0 will win their bet. The over/under does not take in to account who wins or loses the game or if they cover the point spread, it is just a measure of high or low-scoring the game is. So if you as a bettor expect a high-scoring, offensive explosion you would be inclined to bet the over. If you expect a grind-it-out defensive struggle, you would be inclined to bet the under.

Advanced Super Bowl Over Under Analysis

So far in the playoffs, the Steelers have not had an O/U above 40, in fact they have not had an O/U above 40 since their game at Buffalo on November 28 when the under came in. The last game against the Jets, the O/U was 38.0 and the over came in with the 24-19 (43.0) final score. In the divisional round against the Ravens the O/U was 37.5 and the over came in as well with the 31-24 (55.0) final score. Green Bay has been a mixed bag in the post-season, the O/U for all of their playoff games has been above 40.0 with the under coming in against the Bears in the NFC Championship Game with the 21-14 final score (35.0) on an O/U of 42 and against the Eagles in the wild card game with a final score of 21-16 (37.0) on an O/U of 46.5. Against the Falcons; Green Bay easily exceeded the O/U of 43.5 with a 48-21 thumping of Atlanta in the controlled climate of the Georgia Dome.

The last time these two teams met on December 20, 2009 in Pittsburgh, the Steelers won 37-36 to easily cover the O/U of 41.5. Despite the teams ranking 1-2 in the NFL in points allowed, the O/U for this game opens at a relatively high 44.0, in large part because of the climate controlled conditions in which the game will be played in Dallas. Both teams have played all of their playoff games in cold weather, outdoor climates except for the Packers game in Atlanta in which Aaron Rodgers was lights-out and they scored 48 points themselves. Expect the O/U to fluctuate in a range of up to 2 points up or down between now and game time. The number should settle slightly lower than the current total even with the squares betting the over, so if you are expecting another shoot out between these two teams it might be worth it to hold out until closer to kickoff.
